The 45-70 club, are you in?

Something a little different, my "Holy Crap Cannon". Pushing 540 gr. Train Stoppers. 2 quick shots is worth more than 5 in a lever gun that you can't cycle fast enough. Them African Professional Hunters know their "stoppers". I almost found this out the hard way crawling into a slash pile after a bear wounded by my partner. Long story for another time.

Is that the Baikal MP-221 Rifle or the Remington MR-221?

I sold my 24" stainless Encore 45-70 barrel a year or so ago and sold my 14" Contender 45-70 barrel a couple months ago.

Still have my 22" stainless 45-70 Contender barrel and my JM Marlin 1895GS in 45-70.

How do you like the 15" Encore barrel?

I've been thinking about getting one in stainless I'd load it with 460gr Cast Performance bullets.

My other thought is to pass on getting another 45-70 barrel and get 3 more inches cut off my already shortened to 22" 375 H&H stainless fluted Prohunter barrel leave it at 19".

Personal choice. The Winchester 1886 makes up for the contemporary Marlin. The only negative with the eotech is in the rain. They tend to need a good wiping often. Going through wet thick brush in BC would be frustrating to say the least with the attached eotech.

There's a more serious problem with these types of sights. Sunlight entering the sight from behind the shooter & into the unit which blanks it out in a weird, yellowish vertical stripe of color that obscures the aiming point. Instinct & luck are needed bigtime in this situation. Found that one out when at a trap shoot at a range that was laid out in the wrong direction for late afternoon sun. Ugh.

The rainy day stuff makes for extra care of course.

Seems like you guys definitely favour the Marlin over the Henry? Any reason why? I got to shoot the big bore this weekend and I'm hooked.

Joined this club a few months back and went whole hog you might say with a Doug Turnbull 1886 (refinished Winchester) that I had been lusting over for some time at Elwood Epps. My new favourite plinking rifle with a 405 grain TLG flat nose over 13 grains of Unique powder it's like shooting a pellet gun but it rings the gong nicely at 100 yards.

Toying with the thought of putting a Soule style sight on it from Montana Vintage Arms to see how far we can reach out with the old girl, that intrigues the hell out of me but I don't necessarily want to mess with a classic design.

Some pics below for a looky at her.

WOW that's a thing of beauty I couldn't own something that nice I'd beat it up and ruin it...

Just bought another 45-70 barrel = 20" stainless fluted T/C KATAHDIN barrel should be here in a week or so.

Last year I sold my 24" stainless Encore 45-70 barrel and a few months ago I sold my 14" T/C Contender 45-70 barrel I currently only have a 22" T/C Custom Shop Contender barrel in 45-70 and a Marlin 1895GS.

I have a box of 460gr Cast Performance WFNGC's sitting on the shelf waiting for this new 45-70 barrel to get here saving my 325gr FTX and 350gr bullets for the Contender and my 525gr Piledrivers and 550gr Craters for the Marlin.

I’ve got my marlin trapper set up with a salt/pepper laminate stock, stainless loading gate and forend cap.

Doesn’t seem like I’ve figured out how to add photos though.

Thinking about joining again, I used to own a Ruger No.1 but like a dummy I sold it or traded it off. Got a buddy selling his Marlin 1895, 22" barrel, pistol grip, JM stamped. He has some peripherals with it too, Lee loader, some powder, primers, bullets, brass and some factory ammo. He says make an offer but I have no idea what its worth, any ideas gentlemen? It is in nice shape, a few very minor marks here or there, no dings or dents that break the finish on the wood, all original other than a weaver base he added, no scope or rings.
