I bought mine new in '92. I knew that I wanted a pump to match the fire control system, stock, feel, etc of my 870. I was playing around with the idea of getting a .30-06 and having it rebarelled to 8mm-06 when one of the LGS regulars informed me of the recent legitimization of the Whelen. Dropped $100 deposit and ordered it in.
When I finally got the call to pick it up, the owner asked me "what price did I quote you on it?" "$460", I said. "Oh." My heart sank. "It seems I quoted you my cost, not retail price." Being a starving student, I had saved all my loose change for a year to buy it, and I didn't even have enough to cover the final, after tax price. Where was I going to find the rest of the money? Panic set in.
Then the voice on the phone said, "well, that's the price I quoted, so that's the price it is." A huge weight was lifted from my shoulders. I ended up buying everything else from them, spare mags, ammo, sling, scope, rings and mount, etc.
Fast forward a few years and I am now reloading every bullet type I can find for it, the Barnes Xs shot well, but I ended up spending hours scrubbing copper fouling after each session. I settled on the Hornady interlocks for good performance and a decent price.
A few years after I bought it, I ended up scratching the stock and sanded it down and oil finished it. To me, it looked better than the high gloss factory finish.
A few years ago, after having a deer run off after seeing the flash from the sun bouncing off the side of the receiver, I ended up giving the metal a matter paint came job.
I've shot at many more deer with it than I have dropped, but that is my fault, not the rifle. I get minute of deer with it st the range, 1.5-2"@100yds. Recoil is a little too stout for me at the range, but in hunting, I don't notice it a bit. Probably going to install a new synthetic stock with a supercell pad for next fall.
Going back in my notes, I have killed 4 deer with it, but never shot anything over 60 yards away.
I'll post some pics later.
