The 760/7600 Club

Another one in the stable now...760 Gamemaster .308 from my father. Many a deer has succumbed to this one. Pics to come...

Can we make this a sticky now?

What kind of velocity does one lose going from the standard barrel length to a carbine length? 300 yards still ethical?

Hello All,

I've got a mid-50s 760 with a period correct Weaver K4 scope...and I don't like it...the scope, that is. It may seem radical, but I'm seriously considering going to a Skinner "Express" sight and forgoing the idea of a scope altogether. I've always liked the simplicity of iron sights, and this seems an elegant way of improving on the stock sights. Any thoughts?

If you haven't seen them, check out the Skinner website...scroll down past the Winchesters and Marlins...

This being "dad's" first ever scope, all the more reason he should do it right! As a guy with a handful and a half of Remington pump action rifles, I can say with certainty that the see-thru style rings are too high. Even when placed on the monte carlo stocked rifles they are far from ideal. Been there, done that...just trying to save the guys a bunch of trouble, money and a sore cheek!

Agreed. That's what I bought initially. After two years, I went to a weaver base and medium rings on mine to hold a Bushnell trophy 1.75-5x32.

I bought mine new in '92. I knew that I wanted a pump to match the fire control system, stock, feel, etc of my 870. I was playing around with the idea of getting a .30-06 and having it rebarelled to 8mm-06 when one of the LGS regulars informed me of the recent legitimization of the Whelen. Dropped $100 deposit and ordered it in.

When I finally got the call to pick it up, the owner asked me "what price did I quote you on it?" "$460", I said. "Oh." My heart sank. "It seems I quoted you my cost, not retail price." Being a starving student, I had saved all my loose change for a year to buy it, and I didn't even have enough to cover the final, after tax price. Where was I going to find the rest of the money? Panic set in.

Then the voice on the phone said, "well, that's the price I quoted, so that's the price it is." A huge weight was lifted from my shoulders. I ended up buying everything else from them, spare mags, ammo, sling, scope, rings and mount, etc.

Fast forward a few years and I am now reloading every bullet type I can find for it, the Barnes Xs shot well, but I ended up spending hours scrubbing copper fouling after each session. I settled on the Hornady interlocks for good performance and a decent price.

A few years after I bought it, I ended up scratching the stock and sanded it down and oil finished it. To me, it looked better than the high gloss factory finish.

A few years ago, after having a deer run off after seeing the flash from the sun bouncing off the side of the receiver, I ended up giving the metal a matter paint came job.

I've shot at many more deer with it than I have dropped, but that is my fault, not the rifle. I get minute of deer with it st the range, 1.5-2"@100yds. Recoil is a little too stout for me at the range, but in hunting, I don't notice it a bit. Probably going to install a new synthetic stock with a supercell pad for next fall.

Going back in my notes, I have killed 4 deer with it, but never shot anything over 60 yards away.

I'll post some pics later.
