The black bear king of the internet thread.

I thought the deadline was June 15th last I read the opener...........

I have been computerless for the last week, mine crashed and it's been in for repair for more than a week.

Okay I just read the OP again and it now says June 30 but I'm positive when it was first posted it was June 15...........

What a noggin, like you said holy head to body ratio! should call him "Beary Bonds".

I don't care what anybody says, you win the thread with that post. Laugh2

Angus.......if you were out hunting for yourself then I have no objections........Shooting a monster while guiding is a whole different matter, and of course unless your clients are CGNrs, they don't qualify............Besides I still think I can add my 2 skulls together for a total score for the year..........which puts me in at about 34" and change.........There has to be consideration as "Black Bear King of the Internet" for quantity as well as size..........:(:(

Besides I posted the first and the most..........best 2 out of three.........like fishing right......the first, the biggest and the most.........all money winners

You did pull off some of the most challenging entries, the first, and the first double. Fortunately my bear's KOTI (King Of The Internet) legal then, wasn't guiding a client at that time, personal hunt fun.

How many bears did Bwana's thread generate? On a phone and haven't gone back to count em. This one seemed more alive than most of the online challenges, kinda neat as we all have black bears country wide. Was a good idea and good fun.

Sorry for the hijack, but what's in the maceration tank?.... Heading on a hog hunt shortly and I want to do likewise
Maceration is rotting due to moisture. Cut off as much meat as possible, and put it into a 5 gal pail full of water, put a lid on and set it in the sun. When you pour out the water, pour it where you can find any teeth that came loose, pressure wash any remaining tissue off. Then degrease it properly - this takes days or weeks depending on your setup, after that let it dry, then into a peroxide bath, then let it dry. Keep a eye on it in the following months to see if any grease starts to show. If it does, repeat the degreasing.

$250 for local guy is sounding better and better by the minute......

Lol. The thing is, you don't have to actually do much work. It stinks and is disgusting but actual work time is short. But I totally respect those who don't want to mess with it. Just know many guys doing it for money don't degrease properly (some not at a all). If you skip that step the quality of the finished product will reveal itself with time. :) Bears and pigs are some of the worst for grease.
After messing with several degreasers that are recommended, acetone works the best for me.

I've been using isopropyl it works pretty well too, you can dunk your unprotected hands in it which I like, and while no doubt acetone does too it sterilizes the skull and all its lovely built up microbes.

As double points out it's pretty well and effortless method, there's just some stink. I've been converted this past year from boiling, far easier, and less damage to the skulls.

I never really thought about the degreasing as a sterilization proces, but I suppose it is - I kill the smells and microbes when I soak the entire skull in 30% peroxide overnight.

Ardent, I like your line, "there's just some stink". Understatement of the year. :)

Nobody is going to beat that, but I'll shamelessly revel in the fact that it wasn't from this year. :D Admittedly I've never heard of a 751lb black bear from someone directly, that beats most Grizzlies. Have any pics you can post here or a record book entry? I can't view the facebook link, and those are fascinating numbers. How was he weighed? The logistics of bear weighing always interest me. Want to be clear not attempting to call you out on anything you're hearing pangs of jealousy here.

Well I'll do pics with a clean skull and a tape measure in a few more weeks, but green measurement with meat on I'll have to share as I've gone away for flying.

Near as a squinty eye and a tape measure can tell it'll be 21", maybe more, but I'll claim a 20 1/2" until proper measurements are posted. It'll beat that for sure and given it's closing day better get my base numbers in.
