The JR Carbine Thread

Just got home yesterday after a week visiting our kids in Alberta. I spent three days with my boys (son, son-in-law and a couple of their buddies) out shooting. Since I'm the only PAL/firearm owner, I brought the rifles ( my JR in 9mm, a Savage .223 bolt gun & a Ruger SR-22) My JR has become my "go-to" fun gun since I've now got it configured the way I want it. One of my goals was to put as much ammo through it as I could without a cleaning, ideally enough different ammo so I could determine if any were poor performers in this carbine.

We put a total of 1380 rounds through the JR in three days, along with 500 .223 and 2500 .22LR. Expensive ammo bill, but the fun was priceless.

I continue to be increasingly impressed with the JR. in the 1380 rounds, we had 5 different types/manufacturers of ammo...hot, cold, fmj, hollow point, lead ball, steel case (yes, I know its not recommended), brass casing...the full meal deal. In all those rounds, we had one...count it, ONE FTE due to a partial case failure on a brass round, FMJ (hot load). Every other round cycled without a hiccup of any sort.

Although we had more 9mm ammo with us, the gun was so dirty we couldn't get the magazine to consistently stay latched. I truly don't know how it was still firing at all, given the amount of crap & crud built up on everything. It was an awfully messy and time consuming cleanup...one of the worst I've ever done. That said, once I had it cleaned up, I ran a few rounds through it quickly to confirm it was fully operational, and it was.

I think I will be getting a barrel shroud made for it, and likely replace the for end with something a bit lighter. I'm not running lights or lasers on the gun, so I don't need the added weight the existing rails add. This is truly an awesome little camp or truck gun. I'm going to try and find a .45 conversion kit for it to expand there versatility a bit...other than that, nothing needs to be done with it...it's a pretty dang good little rifle.

They fit and function, not that they're worth the price they charge up here...they're still pinned at 10 rds.

Took mine out again over the last whole week. Normally I would take my Ruger as my fun gun but I took my JR instead and it was fantastic! I didn't clean it all week and it functioned without mistake all week in the bush.

It's a great gun and I just keep falling in love with it more and more.

Konrad, I also have a JR in 9mm and I love it. equipped with a barska tactical scope, shoots 2" groups at 50 yards, out at 100 yards best I could do was a 4" group. It was a windy day out on the range and I was a bit shaky.

What would you recommend for a longer for-end? The 7" one that comes standard makes the barrel look reallllllly long. I figure maybe a 12" handguard would give the illusion of a shorter barrel. I'd like to add that, and an A2 style carry handle with rail mount and an A2 style front sight. Where is the best place to get this stuff in Canada? I have seen some interesting items on ebay.

Cheers

Picked one of these up last week. Shot around 250 rounds through with no problems. It's a desert digital camo with a Vortex sparc 2 red dot, and front and rear sights made by Midwest that came off a Robinson XCR. It's chambered in 9mm, glock magazine. Sorry no pics yet but this gun is awesome!! I want to buy another one now!

My 45 has the issue where it'll jam every couple mags on the 8th or 9th round. This is with the included Glock mag

I emailed JR and they refuse to tell me anything, only saying that I need to speak with their gun smith, which is difficult because I cannot phone them from work.

I found a document on modifying the magazine spring, but it also says that the spring on the included mag has been done already.

I can't tell because I'm buggered if I can get the floor plate off without wrecking the mag....

Kinda irritating. More so because its ruining brass.

One of my favorites in 40 cal and I had a moment of stupid and sold it to buy a KSG. The KSG sucked balls, My JR in 40 cal rocked. 1000 rounds and not an issue. had it done up with a Lucid HD7 and it was a reliable fun rifle. The only crappy thing about it was the break down for cleaning and the lack of last round lock back. Other than that, I plan on buying another.

I can't believe they even sell a 45 version I have not heard much good about em. I want a carbine that takes 1911 mags but just can't spend 1000$ for such a problem gun.

I don't know if anyone has done this, considered doing this, or has any thoughts one way or another about the advisability of doing this, so here goes;

Has anybody chopped a few inches off the barrel of their JR?

I've got a newer edition 9mm, and I'm really happy with the gun. Tough, shoots everything I've tried to feed it, accurate for what it is; all round its a really good little truck gun. There's only one thing that I dislike about it...it's about 3inches too long. If I have a gunsmith cut down the barrel, re-crown it and re-thread it, keeping it at or slightly longer than legal minimum length, are there any other issues I should consider that I'm missing?

You won't be able to cut much off a 19" barrel without making it Restricted and no longer a truck gun.

Federal prison, cutting 3" puts it under 18" and makes it prohib.

Yeah, I know...stupid question. I forgot about the "If it's this AND this AND this, then" way the legislation reads. I've got a Ruger SR-22 that's darn near a perfect size, very similar ergs, a bot more than 3 inches shorter...and underpowered for much beyond a rabbit. It was wishful thinking on my part; have the same dimensions roughly with a bit more punch

Bought a 9mm jrc on Saturday and it was straight to the range and 350 rounds later WOW I am loving this rifle so glad I bought it. I am still looking for a red dot or tactical scope in the 255-250$ range but all and all love it

I am running 13" Troy low profile. I would even say that the 15" would be great too depending on your arm length. I am 6'1" and the 15 would have been better for me.

If you are just looking for AR parts and you live close to a board that is an option. But I get almost all my AR parts from the EE here or reliable Gun in Van. They are great guys.

What? It has nothing to do with this and this and this. It has everything to do with barrel length. Under 470mm it would be restricted and would have to be reclassified as such by a gun shop.

I put on Vortex spark 2 works great. $240. They have VIP warranty, not bad.
