Just got home yesterday after a week visiting our kids in Alberta. I spent three days with my boys (son, son-in-law and a couple of their buddies) out shooting. Since I'm the only PAL/firearm owner, I brought the rifles ( my JR in 9mm, a Savage .223 bolt gun & a Ruger SR-22) My JR has become my "go-to" fun gun since I've now got it configured the way I want it. One of my goals was to put as much ammo through it as I could without a cleaning, ideally enough different ammo so I could determine if any were poor performers in this carbine.
We put a total of 1380 rounds through the JR in three days, along with 500 .223 and 2500 .22LR. Expensive ammo bill, but the fun was priceless.
I continue to be increasingly impressed with the JR. in the 1380 rounds, we had 5 different types/manufacturers of ammo...hot, cold, fmj, hollow point, lead ball, steel case (yes, I know its not recommended), brass casing...the full meal deal. In all those rounds, we had one...count it, ONE FTE due to a partial case failure on a brass round, FMJ (hot load). Every other round cycled without a hiccup of any sort.
Although we had more 9mm ammo with us, the gun was so dirty we couldn't get the magazine to consistently stay latched. I truly don't know how it was still firing at all, given the amount of crap & crud built up on everything. It was an awfully messy and time consuming cleanup...one of the worst I've ever done. That said, once I had it cleaned up, I ran a few rounds through it quickly to confirm it was fully operational, and it was.
I think I will be getting a barrel shroud made for it, and likely replace the for end with something a bit lighter. I'm not running lights or lasers on the gun, so I don't need the added weight the existing rails add. This is truly an awesome little camp or truck gun. I'm going to try and find a .45 conversion kit for it to expand there versatility a bit...other than that, nothing needs to be done with it...it's a pretty dang good little rifle.
