The M1 Garand Build Thread

So Don, did you ever make up any barrel vices? Were you planning on selling them, or is there a chance of one getting sent around as a "community" vice? Obviously each person would pay for shipping, probably would make sense for the person sending it to pay shipping, with the understanding that the person before them paid for shipping to get it to them. Not sure if that's on the radar but it sure would be cool!

No. Tanker Garands are not real Garands

Tanker Garand in movie "Fury" LOL

Everyone seems to be out of op rods. I have two , D-6535382IHC and 6535382IHC for International Harvester Garand.
Anyone need to match up a receiver? Will trade for Breda op rods. Who in Vancouver does barrel/receiver fitting?

Got my latest one done today, the 1960 VAR barrels chamber was so tight I had to finish ream it!
I had this up for sale as a parts kit but no takers = my gain! I don't think I will sell this one anymore!!

What looks like a bad park job on the heel is just grease

Just received another receiver and am starting on build # 2. Does anyone have the contact info for that Constantine fellow who was selling barrels and bolts on ebay? Got my first ones from him but he doesn't seem to be active on ebay anymore. Would appreciate a PM if anyone knows, thanks!

PM Zdragunov, he has parts at reasonable prices in the country and none of the worry of your bolt not showing up like Constantines orders seem to have.

They are based off an actual tested variant. Obviously they were never a production or issued rifle like some believe.

If done right I would think it would be fun.

You all should google tim shufflin and his M1 garand mini G
Amazing work this guy does.

I thought about trying to have one of his builds imported but haven't gotten around to looking into it. Would be cool that's fer sure

I am thinking of picking up a complete garand that is fairly beat up and using that as a source of most of my parts. I would definitly refinish the stock and possibly do a barrel swap. Would this be a good idea? And what would be a fair price for a parts gun?

Lastly, if I do a barrel swap to a newly manufactured one will I be able to shoot full powered 30-06 without bending the op rod?

Many here know more than I.
But.
The op rod is the first thing I would check out in a cheap beater. They are getting hard to find in good shape, and expensive when you do. Lots of battered tabs out there.
Next up, the bore.
Between these two parts alone, easy to spend another $5-6-7 hundred to upgrade.

There are plenty other internal parts that need to get a good once over.

If, all the metal's in good mech shape and just needs refinishing, a good bore, stock is salvagable ... say $1000 max IMO.

If you want to shoot full power commercial /06 ammo in any garand, an adjustable gas plug is mandatory if you wish to preserve your op rod.
The powder burning rate in comm. ammo is too slow for M1, equals high pressure at the gas port equals Violence on the op rod.
Adj. plugs don't cost a lot, pocketfisherman here on CGN sold me mine.

Well here she is. Nick at Vulcan did a hell of a job!!

All PB parts except the barrel which is a VAR and the Boyd's Stock. Sling is FKF marked to match the receiver.

Oh my ^.
All PB and a VAR tube.
Can't imagine how much searching around it took to pull that one off MBaker!.
Congratulations. Such a fine rifle you've built from the ground up.

Noticed that the front sight base looks somewhat different from mine, what you got there?.

My initial firing and load developement begins on Dec. 30'th, am hoping this thread evolves to include some range reports.
Hint ... :);)

thinking about throwing this on my m1 garand. since mine is chambered in .308 do i need to worry about over pressure on the oprod with the muzzle brake installed? ( i shoot mostly norinco 308 out of it but i will be starting to do my own reloads in the new year.
