The Moose Thread (As Canadian as it gets)

That's funny, that's his old area. Have you 'flown in' with them?

And to contribute the the thread, my first and only moose was taken at 20 feet with a 12 guage slug, bead sight in thick bush.

Never flown in.... I usually drive up through Timmins with the truck and quad... I prefer a less guided experience with a rented cottage so I can cook my own meals and have my own bonfire... That being said, one of their guided experiences with a meal plan sounds right up his alley

The hide on/hide off thing for us relies on the temperature, now we don't get to hunt until after Thanksgiving, so often we can leave the meat hang for a long time. If it turns warm, however, we will get the hide off quick, quarter the moose and get it out to the butcher fast.

This year we get to calf hunt.. if you've never done that, it's a controversial moose management technique used in Ontario. Shooting a calf isn't hard, if you can get it away from momma moose, but you may have to deal with pissed off momma afterwards. So far it's only happened to me once. If I had been alone, it would have been a very dangerous situation. She was a bit leery of charging the two of us together. But when we separated, she would charge. Gun shots, useless, yelling useless. I chased her away with a big bell that one of the deer camp guys had made as a prank to get the others out of bed.

Calves I have shot since have been without issue, although one I shot at the end of legal light, I found momma standing watching me when I stood up from gutting. She ran when I raised my arms and yelled like a mad man. Good thing, i was alone, I had no light, and no big trees to run behind, just slash.

Nope it wasn't fun, had to clean one side then do the other. I did go back into town and get a guy with a small boat to help me, because it died in the middle of the river. Where we dressed it was as far as we could drag it.
Gun is an older Sendero 300 RUM, Tac bolt knob, with a Badger Thruster brake, bedded in an A-5 stock TPS rings and Swarovski 5-25x52.

OK,

As an Ontario resident, what are my best options to take my wifes grandpa on one more Bull hunt....

He's old, ornery, doesn't like change and always went to a spot in Northern Ontario with his group. The problem is they are all dead and with four of us in the lottery we won't get a tag.

Any suggestions? I'm open to fly in, boat in, or ride in any province but I think the latter two might be too much. I may just have to lie to him until we are beyond the point of no return. This would be for next year I'm thinking.

Call Ralph Pearson at Chalets Diane in Laniel Quebec. Great guy. 1.5hr drive from North Bay.

Over the years I have passed up very few legal bull when I had a tag. Never worried about the size of horns but passed a couple because of the size of their necks.

My best tasting bull was also my biggest, although he was only about 30 inch. He lived all summer traveling about a 1 1/2 mile circle. Alfalfa, peas and wheat made his steaks marbled.
