The Mountain Hunting Thread

That saddle looks like a great place to do some sitting...

Every ounce counts , it can be your boots, belt buckle , Buck knife . Do not use the old stuff buy yourself good lightweight gear and learn to do without . It does not need to be the most expensive , a lightweight knife properly sharpened will work just as good as the heavy one , light comfortable boots make a big difference as well as your clothing , do not pack too many clothes , if they get dirty oh well you are hunting , your rifle should be the lightest you can afford because if you are carrying it in your arms or slung over your pack , lighter means less fatigue and requires less calories burned which will help with your overall comfort and much needed energy and stamina . Every Ounce counts , add them up wisely . All my buddies laugh at me because every year I upgrade something . When they are worn out early I am feeling invigorated and ready to go and I owe this to lightweight comfortable clothing and gear. It is nice being warm comfortable and dry and will help keep you in the field longer improving your odds of a successful hunt , it is hard to enjoy your hunt when you are cold wet and tired and uncomfortable . Okay I will shut up now

Well, most of our sheep seasons have ended here in AB... Can we bump this thread for more advice for Ardent? :p Or, as a Plan B, more mountain hunting pictures?

I just bought my self a new camera, nikon d3500 and ill be in stewart, telegraph creek and Atlin in june for 2 weeks, i hope to get some pics like these while there ( reason for going is to hike around, go fishing and small game hunting. i hope to atleast shoot a goat or sheep with my camera whilst there)

There is definitely something about mountain hunting that is good for the soul!
Not to mention the heart and mind!
Do it while you can, and remember fondly after you cannot. The pictures are worth more than a thousand words!
Age is definitely not the limiting factor, it is your mindset!

While I dream of rams and sheep hunting, there is something very addictive about hunting goats! My first was a 10 1/2" billy! Took two more smaller goats in the following years after that. And caribou!Love the pics of them on here!

The advice on small goals, and keeping a sensible pace can not be overstated! As is the advice on selecting good mountain hunting companions!

The pics are great!
Sorry I cannot share mine easily, but can e-mail if interested.

Same here. I can’t be bothered posting pics any more. I have hundreds of pics from a couple decades of mountain hunts but photo hosting sites piss me off so I post on sites that are user friendly.

Pic w cabin; the Chadwick Ram was harvested in the draw on the other side of the mountain behind the cabin in the upper Prophet River area.
The valley in the second last pic is the hanging valley behind that mountain and before the pass over to the Muskwa River. Cannot see in that pic but there is a 7' plus grizzly up on the side of the middle peak on the left as we rode by.

Old pic is my grandfather and Jack Greer's 1962 Rocky Mtn bighorn taken in the Kakwa area of Alberta.

Next pic of my Dad and a Stone's sheep he guided a hunter to to 1989.

Young caribou meat bull from the Pink Mtn area.

Grizzly harvested by my old hunting partner of the past 20 years in the Sukunka River area of BC. Squared 6'11".

Next couple of pics of hunt for 10 1/2" Rocky Mtn goat taken in Alberta by Grande Cache.

Rocky Mtn bighorn (38 1/2" on the long horn) taken near the Cardinal Divide in Alberta.

Last couple of pics in the Prophet River area and the elk and moose I and my Dad guided hunters to. Moose scored just over 225" and was largest harvested by a hunter in the area that year.
We saw another as big, if not bigger, on that hunt, but my hunter only had an elk tag.
It was in a meadow with 22 cows and a couple of small 2-3 year old bulls. Quite an experience to ride through that herd as we were headed for elk further down the valley.
Saw a good 6x6 elk that would go 330-340 on that hunt, but never could quite get into the right spot for him. Called 6 bulls in to within 15-100 yards for the hunter that day, in one meadow. Hunter said it was the best few hunting days he and his friend who got the moose had ever experienced! Had an up close encounter with a large black silvertip grizzly at 15 yards on the trail one day. If I've ever seen a grizzly that came close to weighing 1000 lbs, it was him! Luckily, he just turned and hightailed it back down the trail away from us. Front pad was 8" across and I could fit my size 11 hunting boot in just the pad of his back footprint. He wasn't much shorter at the shoulder than that of the 16 1/2 hand Belgian/quarterhorse cross I was riding.

And where is that exactly? Based off his pics id assume somewhere in line with bella coola and stewart and maybe up at north as atlin. So i guess the west coast and northwest mountains

South West of Smithers, toward the Kitlope.
