its been a few years since Ive been around the gun but I remember the shell getting stuck as it entered the chamber, we tried crimping more to smooth the end of the case but it still did it, *sometimes*. Probably was a simple fix, the Model 70's are generally a good rifle
Smaller than spec chamber, maybe.

Alaskan

Not to derail this thread or anything, but I took my .416 Ruger Alaskan out to Sibbald Flats today, and put a few 400-grain handloads downrange. A 90-degree hit on 1/4" of T100 steel plate from 50 yards left a smooth, copper-ringed crater and a sizeable nipple poking out the back. Clipping the edge of the plate took out a big, cookie-sized bite.

I bought this thing to stick in the back of my float plane when I travel over grizzly country, and of course I've never fired it in anger. With open sights at 50 yards & repeatable 6" / 50 yard off-hand accuracy, I think it's enough to stop a charging grizz on the first shot.

I have a Remington 700 in .375H&H and I never felt as secure. The Alaskan is a far superior gun for this purpose, so I'm glad I have the Ruger, even as I pray I will never use it for its intended purpose. I am sure a .375 Ruger would be no less of a tool; I just wanted the extra 100 grains lobbing downrange. My suggestion - shoot both calibres before you buy; the .416 is not all that much bigger a kicker than the .375.

Alright I decided to hop on the band wagon, although Im going to try a howa in the thumbhole/laminate variety and see how it works for me. I put in an order with prophet river over a week ago and i can hardly wait to get it.

so, i take it by this thread that i should be looking at a .375 Ruger for a thick bush moose gun not a Marlin Guide Gun in 45/70? :D

As SC said, it will work just as good in thick bush (I shot a deer at 20 feet with my Alaskan last year) :) and will work way better than the 45/70 at longer distances.

Lot's of guys like the Guide Guns and they are a handy package, but they are totally outclassed by the NEW KING in all respects, unless you just have to have a lever action.:)

i need something for up close work. my 7mm Rem Mag dumps critters just fine at longer ranges. i handled one of the Ruger Alaskans and really liked it. I do like how it will work well up close, and as you guys say, it will work well out to the longer ranges. that could be an advantage if my quarry pops out into a clear cut or something. i think i've been converted. next purchase: Ruger Alaskan in .375Ruger. :D
