The next little thing

Unfortunately she can't quite do it, fastest data for her by Nosler is 2890fps with 80gr, with the average falling around 2800. The 5.6x50 mag moves a 70gr mono at 3100 before it's improved to more 6PPC shape, and likely will see 3,250 with improving and better loads. The 5.6x50 Mag loads are many years old and conservative. Starting with a 27" pencil barrel too and will see if I can get 3300fps and keeps the harmonics under control.

Hogdgon lists the 90 grain at 2912 with 31.7 grains of H335.

However, Since you already have the cases, no reason not to go that route, but a 6X39 intrigues me none-the-less and I happen to have a perfect platform for an attempt at it... but that will fall behind the 7.62X57 project, which is loooong overdue for completion.

P.S - I don't see where you listed the 5.6X50 case capacity?

From Mike Bellm, improved case,

Note: This case holds nearly 37 gr. of ball powder, and about 34 gr. of stick powder, compressed.

For those surprised on chambering choice it has to be kept in mind this build is to hit 3 1/2lbs and not break it's ultralight stock, and fly as flat or flatter than a fast .270 load. Fast and light is everything with this gun.

They are not recontouring the action for you? If not, a larger chamber equals less weight, and for any given barrel diameter, a larger bore equals less weight. But, all this is splitting hairs the 5.6X50 Magnum is an interesting cartridge and this project has a clear and highly desireable goal... I look forward to your progress.

The net thus far, is to lodge the 6X39 in my pea-sized brain...

Normally, but Martin is turning my Gaillard to be be .224 bore specific minimum contour, which is a smaller OD than larger bores. The usual issue you're dead right production rifles adopt a single barrel profile and give it to .224/.257/.264/.277/.284 etc. When you build it specific to .224 for example, the smaller the internal diameter of the tubing the higher the pressure it can contain with a thin wall, less surface area inside for pressure to work on.

In short Martin will make my .224 a hair thinner than he would a 6.5 etc. You do give up rigidity when going to smaller diameters, nothing is free!

Looks like you two are in a race for the Ultimate featherweight getting Evan more interesting

Nope... I am not of the "mountain folk" clans... as a "flatlander" I care not a whit about the final carry weight... but I am betting when expressed as "percentage of body weight" mine will be significantly lighter, even moreso after Christmas.

If Ardent hits 3.5 lbs rifle it would be hard to leave at home
I'm realy curious about the stock Ardent is planing on using
It's to bad T/C contender G2 would not take the pressure of 6.5 Grendel it would have bin a sweet rig to pack with a 16" barrel

I'm flying in camp for Christmas... the fare prevents holiday binging. Excited for ya Hoyt, a nice little 6PPC would be a wonderful walking gun.

I had one years ago, but didn't like the platform... also had a .22 PPC and sold it and moved to the .22 BR... should never have sold the BR... but upon reflection, three quarters of my shooting is with .22 Centerfire and 6mm rifles and it makes sense to spend money there... so another 6X39 is in order!

I sold all of my Hornet and K-Hornet and other funky .22 and 6mm centerfire rifles in "the Great Purge of 2014", so I am down to one .223 and one .22/250, and one .243 and one 6mm Rem.

Not to my knowledge.

Really like the BR series and still likely to do a .25, you're still nicely equipped with the present group.

Looks like it will be be beautiful rifle.

Have you considered a baby rolling block in a 30-30 based improved cartridge?

Just ordered my 6X39 reamer and FL die set... shyte!

Get a Lee collet neck sizer die to make the set an extend brass life. It will be interesting to see any of you feller's creations get within your given weight parameters & desired performance goals.

For me own use, I'd do a up a 4 lb. 6.5x39 on a TC Encore with an 18" tube just because of better dumping of
deer & bear performance using 160gr. hardcast boolits. Big lead makes fer better tree & brush cutting contests as well.;)
