The T97 Thread!

I'm definitely interested in purchasing a T97 over a Tavor due to the price point, but wondering what if any aftermarket changes can be made?
- Carry Handle removed for rail?
- Upgraded charging handle
- Mag release
- Front grip assembly with rails

The Type 97 has a nicer trigger pull than the Tavor, although the 97 is a tad gritty. The Type 97 is hard on brass, if you can find them after they been sent into low orbit.

Well here’s a new one.

Part way through shooting today I had rounds start tumbling… bad enough to hit my muzzle break.
I took it all apart to find out why and I can’t see a single thing wrong.

Leaning toward some bad ammo but I feel like that’s a stretch.

Any ideas?

Updates.

After my full tear down and no issues found I took it out again today.
Shot 2 mags of federal bulk ammo with zero issue.

One shot of the old ammo… tumbled.
That was enough for me to stop trying it.

I’m blaming the ammo and considering the gun good overall.

What was the ammo?

What was the ammo?

Western Munitions reloaded 55gr 250 round box.
Lot 112102

They are going to look into it.
I don’t see anything just looking at them.
Might pull a bunch apart and weight stuff if I really feel ambitious at some point.

Edit: just weighed about 50 rounds. Everything is the same as factory ammo.
We will see if I get time to pull some apart.

Today?!? Isn’t it -40 MILLION degrees out where you are?

lol -32C but indoor range.
Had to test this out and a Siberian I just got.

Same. I wish there was still a bulk of it left on the market.

Is it just me, or did it not smell of stale piss? I have no idea what type of powder they were using, or what the political prisoners making the ammo in forced labour camps were doing to it, but ,man did it stink!?

It’s not the best smelling ammo… but for brass case and cheap I loved every crate.

Great ammo for the money. I will do some research but last summer there was a bunch of it floating around thru a retailer in BC. Thing is with the PMC deals that popped up I swear they were in the same $ range. For some reason they also could only ship 1 spam can at a time, weight or somthing like that..

Hindsight… I was paying $340 per 1120 rounds right when I got my license.

They replaced the box of ammo and are sending the information to western metal.
The new box works fine.

Sounds like one of their range guns had tumbles from the same lot but no one else had come forward with problems.

Mentioned a batch of cam pro bullets being too small of diameter.

  1. The Gen 2 and 3 have a full length pic rail, (no carry handle)
  2. Lots of aftermarket/home 3D printed charging handles available
    [*]Aftermarket (improved) mag release available
  3. Pic rails can be modded to fit OEM hanguard, but short of finding a T97.ca LHG, you are limited.
Three out of four ain’t bad though.
Would anybody be able to direct me to the best{current} option for the mag release? I saw the aftermarket 'lever' type, I was thinking more-so Can a Gen 2 or 3 one be directly swapped in, on a Gen 1? or has anyone done a DIY, using an ambidextrous AR one?
Cheerz ~

Would love to try one of these out someday. I've seen almost every other flavour of 5.56mm rifle at my range but I don't think I've ever seen a T97. Probably need to get out more often!

From my recollection, pretty much any of the various aftermarket mag release options are better than the original. Try the EE here or gun p0st, there are usually ads for them.
