thinking of a dual purpose light recoil high performance rifle for deer and yotes.

Flat out 6.5 x 55 hand loads
this gun loaded correct is a monster killing machine
great penitrating power 3 white tail and 1 elk this year
all had hard ball size exit wounds
My 6.5 way built as a long range elk gun and
is grouping 5 shot at .5 of an inch at 300 yards
no recoil with 140 garingers moving at 2950 fps
im getting 1000 ft lbs at 1000 yards
good for a deer at 1000 yards and a elk at 600

Nice.
I look forward to one day shooting a 5 shot 1/2" group.... At 100 yards.

243 Win is the best varmint/deer combo cartridge.
25-06 or even 270 Win is a better deer/varmint cartridge.

There are no free lunches: you absolutely need to define what is your most important hunting need or you'll end up with the wrong cartridge.

If you like the win model 70 then I would look for a 257 roberts featherweight. They pop up on the EE from time to time. Other than that all the cartridges named will do the trick just fine.

I use a .243Winchester for this. You might like any of the other suggestions a bit better if you take them, but the .243Win is cerrtainly apt enough that it won't be the wrong choice and might turn out to be your favourite.

25/06. 75 gr Vmax at 3550 fps. 117 interlock at 3150 fps. Same point of impact at 100 yards in my gun. Never change my scope never needed a second shot on an animal

depending on what your search of rifles that you like brings up: 243, 6mm, 260, 7mm-08. I greatly prefer the short action. I have a couple of 257 Roberts, but have not got into them yet. Would be great for deer, but have no idea what they offer for varminting.

according to Ed Mantunas, long time rifle/cartridge tester and book writer, that is a poor combination. That cartridge in that rifle, was a poor shooter for accuracy. That was many years ago and he was referring to the rifles of that time.
