thinking of getting a mosin nagant

If I could figure out how to post pics here without a URL and I'm hoping for a tula myself as that's what my SK is

Love mine, was on the fence for a long time. Picked it up for 120 bucks with no bayo or accessories, not a collector but a shooter,am very happy with it.
Just get it,shoot it and have fun.

Lol I guess I'm borrowing the wife's card and going in on Friday... I don't get paid until next week so.... I've looked them up a bit and an a little concerned about head spacing on them anyway to check that out in the store with no tools?

You can order a okie set headspace guage 35$ off their site. Get some dummy rounds, if they chamber and extract you'll be ok, im sure they headspaced everything at the aresenal before they were packed up. I got the okie guages anyway for peace of mind , but my bolt doesnt match the reciver, it matches the bayo haahahahah but it shoots and cycles great

Buy it. I'm obsessed with these rifles. I have a Polish M44 and a Chinese T53. The Polish one shoots better for some reason.

They are also fun to field strip and clean...which you will be doing a lot of if you shoot surplus ammo.

Just get it :]
I got SKS first... 1 spam can of ammo later I traded it for Mosin and never looked back. I find shooting surplus bolt action more satisfying and it is much easier to clean after range trip ;]

Ya the sks sure looks to throw the casing pretty far, but I'll be keeping mine something for the wife to shoot lol

I prefer the MN carbines over the long 91/30 personally, and also enjoy operating the MN bolt over the semi auto SKS.

You shouldn't have to worry about headspace unless the rifle was bubba'd, avoid bubba if you can. Get one from a board sponsor or from a reputable dealer, that way you know it wasn't jacked with. Happy shooting.

While I haven't had a slam for in my SKS it's doubled a couple times when it gets hot, how would I know if it's had a receiver swap or fired rimless?

Two ideas are mixed together. Mosin gauges are "coin type" - very cheap and easy to make. You can't use "coin type" gauges for rimless cartridges - these chamber gauges will run you more than $50 each. Point is these gauges are profitable to make and sell by creating the impression that head space is a problem - it isn't. There is a scribe mark on the underside of the barrel receiver assembly that should line up if the barrel and receiver are an original pair.

Modified breech blocks and firing pin assemblies for SKSs are a profitable business because they trade on the fear of slam fires (potentially dangerous if you are in the US and have a 20 round mag.) Incidences of slam fire are very rare and are always attributable to something other than bad luck (poor maintenance, broken sear or broken firing pin). If your SKS fires two rounds for one trigger pull you should stop and make whatever repair might be necessary (probably a damaged or miss-apigned sear).

Thanks for all that info. I have no idea what might be causing it to fire 2 rounds is a '49 tula with the spring loaded FP and only does it after it starts getting hot, I'm currently using Ukrainian surplus I got from cabelas
