I love the 1911 more than any other pistol, and really who doesn't love the 1911? I've been shooting the .45 for a little while now and that's just getting expensive and .22 just doesn't have enough bang. Does anyone have opinions on what are some nice 1911's in 9mm? I'm not doing anything super competitive but don't mind spending to get the right gun for me.
Share some experiences and help me out!

I love my STI ranger ll commander lenght in 9mil.
Has a nice bull barrel, compatible with many 1911 parts without too much fitting, quality fit.
It's only downside it's that the finish wears off easy.
+1 research and buy propper mags, 1911 reliability in 9mil is almost all around the ammo and the mags.
For the 9mm STI 1911, in my personnal experience, MetalForm mags are the best. Nice xtra large base plate, very good feeding, very reliable. I have had bad experinces with cobra mags in 9mm but not everyone will say the same. Dawson Precision use MetalForms body, spring, follower, and put their basepad and slap their sticker on it.
In my .40 i shoot nothing else than cobra mags.

I am seriouly looking to get a STI Trojan 1911 in 9mm, the reviews are flattering at this caliber in this pistol... JP.

It just doesn't feel the same as a 45, honestly. Cycling feels weak and sloppy rather than sharp and snappy. I won't be buying another 9mm 1911. I might buy another one in .45, but for 9mm I prefer my Glock.

I've only run mec gar mags in mine,,and they function ok in the SAM pistol. Sometimes a round will pop out the top on its own. They don't seem to hold them terribly securely. Someone dropped a full mag once and at least half the rounds flew out. Lol

The theme of my ramble is that if you love the feel of the 1911 in. 45 auto, you will be disappointed in a 9mm

I've got an STI USPSA in 9mm. It it probably my favorite 1911. Low recoil, fast shooting, *very* accurate, and reliable. I only use Tripp Cobra mags, so I've never had a mechanical issue that wasn't related to ammunition.

I like to shoot this gun over the winter/indoor season. Lower cost than .40 S&W to shoot in volume.

I have a kimber stainless II and a trojan as well, the kimber will run anything I put in it with my tripp and metalform mags. The trojan only seems to run reliably with the metalform mags. I love them both but prefer the trojan just a bit more.

I completely agree with STI as a choice. I have both the Ranger II and USPSA in 9 mm with about 3,000+ rounds through them with not one problem. I don't use the STI mags but do like the Wilson Combat ones. I used to shoot my CZ Shadow but haven't for the past two years...just really like the feel of the 1911.

I recently picked up a Springfield Range Officer in 9mm. It's got one tight chamber and I have to be conscious of my resizing when reloading for it but it eats factory ammo without any issues.

Hmmm... A lot to consider now. I was crossed between getting something from STI or Kimber. Decision doesn't seem to be much easier but good lots of good things I have heard about the STI's.

Anyone with experience about the STI Trojan?? Been told thats the one to get if any..?

Trojans are great but if you can spend a little more i would get the sentry for the forged frame.

My trojan is in major (.40SW)
I would say one of the big things if you are comparing ranger ll and trojan, is rear sight cut.
Ranger ll has a novak cut, hard to find quality target adjustable sights in this cut.
Trojan has a bomar cut, the sights choices are endless, this is in target adjustable style tough

The ranger feels heavier than the trojan cause of the bull barrel. So i doubt my 9 snaps more in that 4 inch gun than it would in a 5 inch one. I chronied at 134PF at provincials but yet feels so light in recoil. Maybe im just holding on to it much more since im shooting 40 now lol.

STI make a nice adjustable rear for standard Novac cut...so does Dlask, not hard to find.
I run a Spartan IV in .45, kind of a poor man's Ranger II. it's remarkably accurate, handles hot loads like a champ. I prefer Commander size over full size...just handle better for me.

And this brings the next question, will the OP wish to attend shooting sports with his 1911?
If yes different sports have different requirements, its to be researched...

Hitzy, i have the STI adjustable rear Novak cut, i hate to say it but it sucks compared to a nice bomar.
Will have to research the Dlask one never looked at it.

Have 2 STI Sentrys in hard chrome. One in 9mm and the other in 40. Also STI Rangemaster hard chrome in 9mm. You won't be disappointed. Ended up selling all my other guns to get these 3. No regrets.

I have both and STI Tactical SS (Single Stack) and a SAM Commander. Both are great. My SAM took about 2-300 rounds and broke in really nice. Runs well with Wilson or Tripp mags, but I like the Tripp ones better. My STI needed a bit to run perfect. It hated the Wilson mags, Tripps run perfect. Had to file down the ejecter a bit to get the 10 round mags to fit right without hitting it, but with a couple hundred through it, it runs like a champ now. The STI chamber is REALLY tight though. Like the other guy said, I have to really watch my reloads, but if they are good it feeds.

Lots of naysayers on 9mm 1911s, but I would be surprised if they all have one.
