Thureon Defense 10mm Review/Pics/Chrony Results! (AKA My Very First KB!!)

Something I was worried about before I even bought the gun. The makers of the JR carbine didn't put out a 10mm due to the extra concerns with the cartridge and I think it was a good decision. Since this is a blowback design there was no chance for it to unlock early since it never locked in the first place... Only bolt mass and the recoil spring to fight the violent forces that normally exit the front of the firearm...

Don't feel bad. Normaly safe loads in locked breach guns are not certain to be safe in a blowback design.

Sean Hanson at Freedom Ventures used to import the Mech-Tech rifle top end conversion kits for the 1911. I asked if he'd had any problem using his .38 super IPSC loads in his. (I had bought a Trojan in .38 super and was thinking about it.)

Sean said the brass was noticeably bulging with his regular major load.

Another friend has a 9mm Marlin camp carbine, and his standby IPSC minor load using AA#2 was blowing brass.

I have a hard time believing that a reduced (from factory produced ammunition) power load would cause any concern in a modern (read: over built/over engineered) action regardless of type. I would be more inclined to question the quality of hand loading: condition of recycled brass, resizing operation, powder charge and type, crimping, etc., etc.

The spring on the Thureon is very strong and hard to pull back, i have tried a JR at the range and pulling the bolt back was a lot easyer, on the fishing scale, from an uncocked position, it take 22 pounds and 3 ounces to bring the bolt completly to the bottom ( just made the test )... JP.

Thureon Defense may be interested in getting your gun back in exchange for another. They can use it to study extreme failure of their firearm. From there they can make product improvements if needed to safe guard others from having to go through what you just did.

Yes, they definitely would want it back so they will know what happens after their design is subjected to gross overloads for the gun  If the basic rules of handloading were followed by starting low and working up for each gun individually, as soon as these ridiculous velocities were spewing forth one would have immediately stopped shooting. Most likely the firearm was damaged at this point, certainly the recoil spring took a beating at the very least. All one has to do is remember TINSTAAFL!

Loads were as follows, I used virgin starline brass.

200xtp, 12.5grns AA9 (13.2 max hornady 8th edition) cci 300 primer with COAL of 1.260".

135 nosler, 13.6 grns 800x (14.5 max IMR produces 33,000CUP at max) CCI 300 COAL of 1.260"

180xtp 10.5grns Blue Dot (11 max Speer # 14) CCI 300 COAL 1.260"

I handweigh all charges ( a must for 800x!) and am really quite an anal loader. Any brass I have that isn't virgin is sent off into a pail to be loaded light with a 180 LRN bullet. I am not trying to deflect any blame. I got lazy and didn't start all over with this rifle. As was said a locked breech pistol is a different machine than a blowback rifle. Recoil was stout but not too bad, cases ejected consistently. My spent brass has significantly more case head expansion than I normally see but is less than a max load out of a stock Glock 20.

No blame is given, i have concerns about this situation and finding why it did happen is important... JP.

I emailed Thureon when I was considering the 10mm and when I asked if they had tested the gun with hot factory rounds like double tap or buffalo bore and they said they had not.
I've got a 9mm that I really like so I was considering the 10 mm but after discussing hot loads with them and the fact that I need a new work truck I decided to hold off....
Thanks for the report B, I'm glad you and the carbine are ok.....mags are cheap.

I really wanted a 10mm carbine. Thanks for posting.
I'll definitely be re-thinking this as the blowback option clearly isn't on par with the locked breech design in handguns.

B, I want to commend you for bringing this issue to everyone's attention, and am glad that no one was injured.
I, like you, would have assumed that the manufacturer would have done some testing with overproof rounds to ensure that once their firearm was released, this event would not transpire.
I conclude that this a perfect example of why reloading manuals stress the need to start at the low end of published loads, and determine it's suitability in any particular firearm.
Having had no issues with blowback designs, (9MM AR, CX4, etc.,), previously, I would not have thought to do the prudent thing and do dedicated load development.
Lesson learned.....and once again, it underscores the true meaning of assume....it ends up making an Ass out of U and ME!
Once again, I would be guilty of the same thing.....I guess I'm the living example of "better to be lucky...than good".

I will stick to commercial ammo when i start shoothing my TD 10mm and i will put on the backburner all the super hot loads, i had in mind, staying ind the middle of the pack should be just fine, lucky for me my reloading supplier will gladly cancell my order of components until further notice, got 500 UMC 180gr loaded at 1150 fps that should be just fine in the 10mm... JP.

That's a bit of an overreaction on your part to cancel your plans to reload for the 10mm. The whole point is to find the most accurate load for your rifle for an intended purpose - not the hottest round you can make for it as you were planning to do. Not to mention the coat savings you'd enjoy making your own ammo.

If you plan on shooting your TD on a regular basis, depending on store bought ammo is going to be a pain in the a$$ to say the least.

Looks like an unsupported chamber issue to me unless somehow you were able to slip a little extra powder in on that one load.

I've been loading 10mm since 1988 B's loads are definitely not over the top.

Keep us posted, since mine is unfired, if there is a problem, i will contact Clay at Prophet and he will make things right... JP.
