Thureon Defense 10mm Review/Pics/Chrony Results! (AKA My Very First KB!!)

I was contacted by another TD owner who had a KB with a .45... Ill be in contact with thureon today to try and get things sorted out.

They will probably tell you the gun isnt going to be covered by any warranty because you used handloads. High pressure... Bla. Bla...

Had a few questions answered from TD today, In regards to any problems with the 10mm models going boom Keith said, and I quote: "We have not had any issues with our 10mm blowing up"

They seem like good guys but I don't know why they wouldn't test their 10mm model with the hottest commercially available rounds in the U.S. as a bare minimum and then test with hot handloads as well.
Most factory 10mm is pretty weak and they must know that people buying their 10 mm carbines are probably going to be reloading for it....

I asked specifically about this, ill post their response. My loads were well within the established limits for the cartridge. Impressive gains out of the long barrel do not prove otherwise in fact they were right in line with what I had expected to see.

I asked them about a month ago and they told me they had not tested the 10mm with Buffalo Bore or Doubletap's heavy commercial loads.

Don't firearms mfg'rs test their guns with proof loads?
I would find it hard to believe in this age of liability aversion that a firearms company of all things wouldn't do this.

Today tried my 10mm TD 50 rounds of UMC 180 gr rated at 1150 fps, did shoot over the Oehler after clearing the picnic table full of snow, i am very satified and now worrys free, this rifle sure is a smooth operator, no FTF or FTE, quite loud and with a hefty recoil the average out of the long tube is incredible average 1490 fps for 50 shots, i have to mentionned after learning about blowback action, as it was suggested, i did apply i little dab of marine grease on the case turning it betwen my fingers to make the case lightly grease, will always do it in the future, it is a great rifle and it do have a very high fun factor, did check a few case and none had a bulge so we are good to go with commercial ammo... JP.

Buffer?! That's at the end of the cycle. Bolt/spring too light for the impulse.

Yes, I agree however I doubt trying to educate them will do much good. I should have trusted my first thoughts instead of going ahead and treating it like I did. As long as they take care of things in a satisfactory way I am happy. I am looking at having a tungsten spacer machined ($$$$!!!) to replace the carbon steel one provided. On top of that I am going to find the heaviest recoil spring I can. Hopefully the two combined will help to prevent further issues.

If anyone knows of shops that deal with tungsten please let me know.

I will just buy commercial ammo and forget about a super duper reload for it, those UMC 180 gr were quite a handfull of power, i did figure out that this 10mm is forking out just south of 900 pounds of energy with that ammo, this is amazing for such a small round... JP.

1500 fps is quite satisfactory with commercial ammo and i guess it was for what the rifle was built, now if Thureon offer an upgrade for the super loads, it will be perfect... I HAVE A QUESTION, SINCE THERE IS SUCH A GAIN OF VELOCITY IN THE LONG TUBE, DOES IT MEAN THE MORE THE SPEED, THE MORE THE PRESSURE... JP.

No means that the powder is having time to burn completely...

I'll dig out some of my velocity data for 4.25"/5"/6"/18" when I have time or you could go to Glock Talk my data is posted in a carbine sticky in the 10 Ring forum.

To give you a taste and if I remember correctly my top 135gr Nosler JHP load in a 6" barrel = 1880fps and 2200fps in the 18" barrel.

If I find the time to get out coyote/bobcat/mtn lion hunting this winter I have been planning on taking my 18" barreled T/C Contender in 10mm loaded with the 135gr loads.

Should be a lot of fun now I just need the time...

Any of you know if anywhere other than Prophet River has stock on these guns I'm only interested in a 10mm.

Been wanting a non-restricted 10mm semi-carbine for years now if I have to wait for Prophet so be it but it would be cool to not have to wait...

:D

It is not an issue of more pressure, you have to take into account that in a locked breach handgun the pressure drops to 0 once the bullet leaves the short barrel, at which point the breach has begun to unlock and extract the case. In a longer barrel, loaded with slower powders the pressure is MAINTAINED for a longer period of time. Blow back operated weapons are very finicky about their pressure/time curves. The pressure must drop low enough for the case to properly relax and be extracted and/or actually blown out (many blow back actions firearms function fine without an extractor, and only need one to remove an unfired cartridge from the chamber). Load for the weapon type and not what the cartridge can do in a locked breach and you'll be fine - mess with it and you'll have to pay the consequenceses.

I had a 10mm go off out of battery in a 1911. Blew the grips off, the mag out the bottom and knocked a lens out of my glasses but I was unhurt.
The gun was unhurt too.
The case looked exactly like yours
I wasnt using anything hot in it either

The link Deckart posted is of great value, i intend to respect that for all the ammo i will use in TD 10mm, the part of putting a little dab of thick heavy grease (marine) and make sure the case is lightly grease is a very good insurance againt head case separation, but unless there are some kind of sure thing coming from TD, i will buy ammo by the case and play safe, those UMC are not loaded to maximun as the velocity announced is at least 200 fps slower than some Buffalo bore ammo... JP

Just made an interresting read on Buffalo Bore site about their hot loaded 10mm ammo, they clearly state that due to the power of the load, it is better to change the spring of your handgun to a stiffer one... now...now... this advice should apply to a rifle blowback action as well... unless we dont shoot BB ammo... JP.
