hey guys
well wanted to pick your brains .
as I am waiting for threading kit for my sks I decided to pop off the front sight and shorten the barrel by only an inch...
wanted to ensure I was in the clear with the length as just in case I measured incorrectly or some dam thing.
I blued the end of the barrel to protect it till next stage ( threading ) and would like to know would it really matter if I do or do not crown the end... has anyone experienced shooting with out the barrel crowned?
Thanks in advance
Glenn.

Honestly, I think it's more important to have the cut square. Having the crown recessed is more for protection of the crown I would think.

Are you mounting a red dot or scope of some sort? If so, just make sure there are no burrs in the muzzle and that you have a truly "square" cut,
then shoot a few groups and answer this question once and for all.

here is my trimmed sks:

Cut about an inch off to get rid of some damaged rifling, cut the front sight base in half(get rid of the bayo mount) its easy to do the crown when you have a lathe and the bbl removed. to remove items from the sks bbl all you need to do is drive out the pins and use a brass drift and they come right off, not rocket appliance. Now removing the bbl thats another matter, she was tight like a tiger. honestly if you get it close with a file, and break the edge by lapping it I don't think you will notice an accuracy loss/dif with combloc surpluss.

this photo may not show up well.
I took a pipe cutter and took my time , only took 5-10 minutes I think I will have to do something as the end is square but noticed the chrome lining is exposed just by a hair

I'm sure some if not most of you could have done better but it's first attempt for me and so far so good.

The pins popped out with only three hits with hammer and then I placed end of barrel on log I use for spitting wood and used small sledge to hit the bayonet nut and to my surprise it slid off with two more hits....some bluing to protect it for now.

@tazzharm, with a pipe cutter you squeeze the barrel diameter smaller, I think it's dangerous to shoot.

When I do a test fire I will not be placing face or body part any where near firearm . I will have it secured to table in back of property and shoot a few rounds to ensure stable then worry about if its accurate . I had already thought of this but inspection end of barrel and measuring with micrometer so far so good. but thanks for the heads up
Glenn
