trimmed sks barrel

Its not a problem to cut down the barrel length, but people need to understand the value of the crown verses accuracy. If you are getting a 12 inch group at 25 yards, you will need to re-inspect your muzzle. I've had rifles given to me because they can't hit a barn from the inside, but a 15 minute repair to the muzzle/crown has it hitting bullseyes.

Hey
If everything goes well and I can free up some time I'll take it out back of my property and strap it to table and test fire it to ensure barrel is ok and then see if it is shooting straightish before the crowning

A before and after range report would be interesting

Hey
Ok so today I took some time and went out to the back and tested my sks to see how things ran after I took an inch off the end and removed the front sight. Before anyone starts in please my shooting spot is just under 25m and I mainly use my ruger 10/22 . I wasn't trying to hit the wings off a fly nor show off how good or bad I am.lol but just to see how the rifle functions and ensure the end wasn't compromised .
As I could move back and get a longer shot I didn't want to and besides too many trees behind me and I would be shooting slightly up hill and didn't want to chance anything .
I only fed the rifle by hand and one shot at a time and after every shot inspected the barrel to see if anything bad was happening and found nothing. total shots taken 20 rounds of surplus non copper washed ammo.
the bipod (ncstar) worked great and much better then the tapco combo one that came with the stock which I found that the rifle would bounce after every shot
I took some photos to show you nothing too fancy but hey everything worked.
Photobucket working on something so not all photos uploaded.
waiting for site to come back up...will post pics shortly
Glenn.

Hey
ok so it still won't let me upload more photos so I'll stick with two for now..
as you asked
first shot no paper target but just to ensure barrel didn't explode and it didn't so placed target and second shot was on paper ( yes can't miss that close but hey )
each shot was loaded by hand and barrel inspected every time and things look good... so should I crown it or not
what do you think..
I'm still waiting on threading kit so I have time. with muzzle brake installed should be back to 20 inches long
and have to say rifle feels good without front sight post on..

Needs more shots on target! The thing we are looking for is whether the crown is causing bullets to group badly. I would guess, though, that you
have succeeded in creating a good crown and now all that can be accomplished is to protect that good crown with a counter bore. Why bother?

Hey...sorry I didn't type in my response earlier I forgot ...the barrel is flat no crown. My camera just wont focus on the end for some reason but the end of the barrel is as it was after I cut it square and no crown.
I have a photo of the next target with five shots straight , only thing I did was load manually one at a time as I was still inspecting the barrel for defects or other damage.
the target photo above was used for the first 13 shots as the first wasn't into paper on purpose then new target paper and last 6 shots

Sorry still won't let me upload to photobucket site keeps telling me error.
once it's working I'll post the target with all five shots but at least you get the idea...it didn't blow the barrel at least.

My photbucket is a useless waste of time today too. At any rate, cutting a chrome lined SKS is easy as the op has demonstrated. Cycling is not affected and neither is accuracy if a good crown is done. I used a zipcut followed by a file to square the cut then crowned with a hand drill and cone stone. The rifle shot the same before and after. And no, the chrome lining doesn't chip or flake. Nice work OP, I bet it'll shoot just fine for you.

Hey
so it's only allowing one more photo

Keep in mind I wasn't that far away and I'm not saying that it's perfect , but again the barrel held up and the rifle shoots well, to bad I don't ...lol
anyways to the folks who wanted more photos these are the ones that show the shot groups.
this photo again was six shots loaded by hand and target and barrel inspected in between shots.
next will be to pick up some brass screws and do a small crown then thread the end and install the birdcage style brake.
Glenn

That looks to me like a good 25 yard group. My understanding of "Crown" is whatever is at the end of the barrel, regardless of bevel or
square cut or chewed up and snaggle toothed. Because you are going to thread and brake the muzzle, I wonder if beveling the crown is just
a waste of time and a risk of getting it wrong?

Hey
so I'm not sure what to do.
should I still pick up the brass screws and put a small crown on it just to atleast clean it up? or just leave as it is?

Glenn

sounds good
next weekend there is a range date open at Borden so I will try and get up .
even if I get the threading kit I will try and hold off completing the build.
however... the rifle may shoot fine doesn't mean that I can at 100m lol
will keep you posted.
Glenn

Ok.
so I couldn't wait ... sorry.

I was able to take a bit of time today and decided to thread the barrel , I measured the amount of threads inside the brake and cut just over 3/4 of them as I needed to test fit numerous times to allow the brake to sit properly. not threading too much or too little
only thing I was not too keen on but was expecting was the lack of crush washer. nothing to secure it to so lock tight was used. and will keep an eye on the brake as I use it.
on wed I'm off and will try to test fire in the back before I go up to borden on saturday and try the 100m . I did put a small crown on the end aswell
overall I really like it, the brake completes the end and as I stated I never did like the bulky front sight and think this is way better.
Glenn.

hey
well to keep you posted I did a test fire in the back today before borden trip on sat.
again it's close so this just function test.

this is the last five shots.
after I took a few shots to re adjust the sights and ensure things were running fine I put up new target and five shots to see .
not bad. I'm really happy with not only the looks now but so far so good it shoots well.
Glenn.
