Mine does the same pull out on the left knob, it’s spring loaded, as you pull on the knob and rotate to the zeroe lift on the top hand guard cover (there is no tube underneath) and it will come up. It’s very tight the first time...

Pull the knob on the left outward, then keep turning.

awesome thanks guys

also should be the receiver cover ( its rear end of it) be just a bit to the front of the lower eciever body ( also rear end of it)?

this is what I am talking about:

I would think the right one is correct way

also for the guy and wobbly mag video:
my mags are also wobbly as hell, but hold the bolt... I guess the problem is the follower in the mag itself as the second mag in that video on page 95-96 worked fine..

Must say I just took the thing apart and I'm impressed. Quick and easy take down with that rear button. No apprentice marks or grinding on my bolt and the thing is dripping in grease.

Going to have to grab some indoor safe 7.62x39 tomorrow and give it a whirl.

Can you take a picture of your stock from behind. Is yours perfectly vertical?

I will, putting my kids to bed and don't want to upload to flickr again... The rifle is visually straight and the folder is slightly bent to the right, I had to look for it, I haven't done any lazer lines, lol.

Having said that I have folders on two of my VZ58's they are NOS (new old stock) and they are not perfectly vertical. I realize that there have been some Type 81's out of spec, but remember they are built to old world battle standards, sheets of sheet metal hammered out on a press, they are not CNC machined too north american standards.

I truly believe that most of the out of spec CGN hysteria is jealous trolling done by people who don't even own one (Yes I know there have been a few out of spec and I get that frustration). It sucks to be the guy who gets one, but a few defects out of 1000 plus is not abnormal for com block pattern rifles.

Look at it people, its beautiful!!!! Its on par with all the other Norinco's people love to hate.

I am still in shock that we have them here in Canada and am grateful to have my hands on an amazing example of a Sino-Soviet weapon design!!!!

By the way, is there a kit to make the safety/fire flag ambidextrous and... as a continuation, is there a kit to make Right sided safety, just like in modern versions of AK?
Why? just because for some ppl type 81 is perfect by itself, for me... I still need the rifle as close as possible to the one I spent my youth with-THE AK
