Type-81 pictures, range reports, and modifications thread

I just discovered the cleaning kit in the folding stock. I was trying to figure out how to change the dark color handguards with the lighter ones TI provided and it popped out. Cool. Rather ingenious place for it.

Pretty much DONE.... other than a tiny squirt of black spray paint.

hical ! although i did remove the grenade launcher before submitting the rifle to them. Not sure if they provide that service or not.

based on the barrel thickness, what thread spec you recommend?

5-8x24 (a lot more muzzle device options available)

or

14X1 LH (fewer option?)

Thanks! Beautiful job by the way!!!

thanks! barrel OD is 14.44 mm, there isnt enough material for 5/8-24. there are a handful of great muzzle brakes in 14x1mm LH but theres also a chance hical or somebody else could thread it for 14x1mm RH, which would allow a vast assortment of VZ 58 brakes. I personally chose LH since I had a few AK brakes lying around.

i emailed dave awhile back and he said they would remove it but they havent done it before so im leery to be the guinea pig.

I feel ya, maybe attempt it urself first ? Only tools i required was WD 40, a larger than average hammer, a punch, a piece of steel flat bar and a bench vise equipped with soft jaws.

ethan or b43ma would a magpul moe ak short handguard be easier to install than the zhukov handguard?

I took mine off just for the hell of it.
Drive out the cross pin at the base of the base of the grenade launcher sleeve.
Secure the rifle to a work bench on its side (ie clamp it down, drive bolts or nails into wood top around the rifle to secure it from slipping forward etc however you want to do it) and use a brass punch with a good chunk of gun tape on it to tap the sleeve forward and off from the base.
I sprayed penetrating oil into the muzzle/base of the sleeve the day before and allowed it to work its way in before attempting it.
It comes off very easily in this manner.
It looks way better with it off but that just may be my weird preference. Also shaves off a chunk of weight at the furthest end of a long barrel.
Setup is key to any force applied to a firearm.

not sure, if the lower handguard retaining ring sits at the same length as AKs, it should be easier.

I cut off the retaining ring right off, and I don't think you can easily re-adjust the position of the ring (forwards or backwards).

Even though you can fit the lower portion of the MOE handguard in position, you may have to adjust the height of the top (upper handguard: gas piston cover piece), and the 81 upper handguard is longer than AKs.

Que Son holding her own against many other "formidable" platforms! She scored higher this year then what my CSA VZ58, Benelli MR1 and Colt A2 Sporter did last year! and MOST IMPORTANTLY, scored MUCH higher in Bubba form then she did back when she was stock ( I believe she scored 70ish points in 2018). Guess Bubba didnt do so bad after all haha
