Type 81 vs AK47

Cross training with a B3 airgun is a bonus...... :)

Cheap is the name of the game here. I'm not spending anything on my SKS outside a possible sight upgrade. Looks like those 81s have similar sights with a shorter sight radius.

Apparently they have a nicer rear sight but I've shot SKS's with the Williams peep replacement and a fiber optic front post and that setup worked well despite the short radius.
The fully adjustable Tech rear peep looks the best though.

So I just went to WIKI and did some measurements on my own SKS.

1. "Detachable mags" - I can convert my SKS to detach mags if I want, but the stripper clips continue to work very well either way w/o any feed issues whatsoever. Those huge 30rnd mags are a PITB for hunting carry whereas the the sleek little drop mag on a SKS is a much better system.

2. "Weight" - If I remove the bayonet from my SKS, I come very close to the weight on a Type 81.

3. "Length" - Looks like the SKS is a whopping 1.4" longer. WOW!! .... That's huge.

4. "Looks" - Who cares about looks anyways as both are military based rifles? Looks are not an issue unless one like to dress up with their rifles in hand.

Well then you just bubbad a peice of history... That being said there were millions made.

Either way, by the time you put all those upgrades into the sks, you've probably spent as much, if not more, than the type 81, and not to mention; will the sks run reliably? It was never intended for what you described doing to it.

Type 81 was designed and works very well for all those things.

My 2 cents.

Silver lining for all the nostslgic folks reminiscing they paid 20 shilling for a Brown Bess back in 1750 so all Chinese guns should cost $200 bucks.
Gas prices has gone down so we can save some cash to buy more guns.

Please read my subsequent posts to the one you quote. You will find that I spent ZERO $$ on upgrades for my SKS and may only do the sight upgrade in the future. No bubba whatsoever.

Either way, I only wanted to know why I should shrug off the SKS for the 81. No one as of yet has given me good practical reason. :)

Well personally I like the stock sks, I would honestly take it over the AK, ability to feed from the open mag at bottom, stripper clips, no bulky mags to carry, easy of maintenance, durable, better sights than on the AK....

But I haven't shot a Type 81 yet so I can't comment, but I suspect it will have all of those things, I hear the sights are really good, and the rifle is supposedly very accurate from when I hear from guys who have shot it in the states.

It looks more pointable and easier to handle, especially since it has the pistol grip and stock options. I like the bolt hold open, and I like how it too is easy to disassemble.

Comparing the stock options (no extra mag capacity allowed for sks... 10 only) then the Type 81 has the advantage for capacity, and reloading, but with an sks, it has the ability to carry less weight by only packing stripper clips.

Both have pros and cons...

The VZ-58 seems to have the best of both worlds, with the larger mag capacity and ability to load via stripper clips. Sights are really nice and it's light and slick.

I would have to say each are good for their own purposes...

But clearly there is a reason the Chinese switched to the Type 81 from the SKS... They liked certain features of the SKS, but not others... So hence the type 81 is born.

It also replaced the AK type 56.

So it will be interesting to compare all alongside each other, once they are available in Canada.

I can't wait :)

It also depends on the intended purpose/application of your firearm.
People debate which firearm is best based on different intended use cases.

Right ...... The vast majority of these type of rifles are used for range blasters with cheap FMJ ammo.

Probably not limited to range, but also more private/crown land plinking.
Also depends on the type of cheap plinking, both sks and mosin are execllent choices.
There is an alternate plinking that a lot of red and black gun guys do, that's operator role playing. In that sport coolness itself is a part of the use case, perfectly valid purpose since sporting arms in Canada is a hobby topic.

I'd imagine the original didn't come with an 18.5 inch barrel so that will be an added cost for non restricted.
I'd guess around $1000.00 after shipping and taxes.

Still 5 only rounds though...

The 5 round law needs to be updated in my opinion...... Canadian gun owners have been using 10 round pistol magazines for years now with no problems and there are probably thousands of pinned 30 round magazines circulating without issue.

Given the recent "dis-information" campaign the RCMP have been on, I'd say we are moments away from them announcing that they are helpless to stem the flow of scary high power assault weapons and magazine loop holes........ their suggestion to save the country. An overhaul of classification and magazine laws.

Till then an AK pistol mag would be legal at 10 rounds.

The best thing about the type 81 is it makes the SKS look like grampa's old duck gun.

The 81 looks great, and it's fantastic that it's been cleared to enter Canada. I'll probably get one too. But I'm seriously sick of having 4WDs that are stuck in 2WD. So the allure fades fast...same with the SKS. But I still begrudgingly shoot them. Can anyone say blue balls?

This is cute! We as a whole I'm sure would love to be able to own AK rifles, so we look to lookalikes then try to say there better the the AK we can not own and use. Like the vz58 platform it's a great rifle just not a AK. I picked up one cz858 them three more and I'm sure to do the same with the type 81 rifle. But ohhh, I wish I could have a AK!!!! With this said, I do have a very nice m78:).
