True 'nuff. I was more thinking of the "beanbag" suggestion -- that could play less well in court as evidence of preparing for an attack could be interpreted wrongly.
As "duck hunters" are about the most publicly accepted stereotype of a gun owner, what I was saying is that this might be the best thing to present ones self as. For whatever reasons, being prepared to defend yourself, even from bears, seems to be frowned upon by some segments of society. If you end up with a jury made up of these types, you want to appear as harmless as possible. "Killing winnie the pooh" is only marginally better in these people's eyes than killing the "poor underprivliged misunderstood burglar".
Slugs would be a better choice if we had a better legal environment, fer sure...
