Vintage Marlin 455 bolt action Mauser

Yep 1-12 is good for 30 cal. From what I've read. I'll see what the local store has in 308. Still waiting on the Sweet 7.62 before I start throwing ammo down range

A little better pic of the bore. 16 groove 1-12 twist. Hopping that brown is copper. Tried some 150gr still key holing. Still waiting for the Sweet 7.62

Why are you not cleaning the barrel? You don't have to wait to get Sweets; there are numerous, perfectly acceptable, ways to clean a barrel. For some reason, this barrel is not stabilizing the bullets. When this is the case, it is more than a fouling issue, though this may play a part. There are various potential causes for this, including an oversized barrel, a bulged barrel, a carbon build-up in the throat and more. A look at a recovered bullet would provide a clue, as would an examination of the barrel by one who knows what he is looking for..

Don't have a lead bullet I think I have a jacketed bullet I can try. I've tried a couple of solvents Hopes 9 and G96. Used bristle brushes of course. From what I've read Sweets is good for removing copper fouling. It's a used rifle that I'd like to make usable. Learned a lot already working on it. Lots of knowledgeable people here I won't need to bring it to anyone else. Lots of eyes on it here. It's either shot out worn out or fouled. No burrs on the muzzle. The condition of the 60+ year old rifle makes me think it's fouled.

Don't try a jacketed bullet. You need a chunk of soft lead, like a fishing weight or something. Use a brass rod close to the bore diameter. The lead piece doesn't have to be very big. Ideally the same size as the bore, or just slightly smaller. You want to force it down the bore from the chamber, engaging the riffling as it goes, looking for a steady amount of pressure along the length of the barrel. If the pressure eases up, you have a worn, or a bulged area in the barrel.
As Leeper mentioned, fouling alone probably wouldn't cause the tumbling issue, but it might.

Worked on the rifle. Got the sweet today. Was hoping for better results. Not totally bad. Sellier and bellot and federal power shock 150 gr. Out of 10... 5 each a couple made roundish holes out of both. More key holes from both. Argh. More research is required lol. I did qtip the muzzle seems ok. Any other tips are very welcome. If the barell is bulged then I guess it's done. What would bulge a barell? The groups are decent. The barrel rubs on the stock a bit. Thought I'd deal with that after the keyholes are gone. I'll pick up some 110gr in the next few days see how they fly

Btw it's a micro grooved barrel for those just joining in

Not ready to give up on this. Reading some more about cleaning fouled barrels. There might be layers of fouling. The sweet did remove a lot of blue and started coming out fairly clean. Going to clean with the other solvents and then back to the sweet to see if it gets more blue out. I should check the other rifles to see if there is brown in the rifling. Wonder if it's common normal

I think I found the problem. Is it repairable. I have got rid of the copper. Got rid of the brown. There's a scratch about an inch or less in the muzzle. Thought it was fluff first time and second time etc. Tried to remove it with qtip and patch. I think it's a scratch. Thinking its throwing off the twist on the bullet. Anyone fixed something like this? Any ideas

Thinking some previous person used a drill for cleaning. I know that's a nightmare. Wonder how far the scratches go. F. Wonder how much a bore scope is

I'm thinking some abrasive on bullets

Never used abrasive on a bullet but read about it. Or a dowel with abrasive. Don't want to mess it up more with emery cloth. What would you use. Maybe abrasive on a patch

I have some stuff for stropping knives. Put some on a few rounds. Can't hurt right?

Next pic looks like a daisy lol and me looking like our leader w a turban
