Vintage Marlin 455 bolt action Mauser

I have some stuff for stropping knives. Put some on a few rounds. Can't hurt right?

Next pic looks like a daisy lol and me looking like our leader w a turban

Just use some Flitz, or similar, once you get the copper out. Still don't think the scratch would do it... Did you run a piece of lead in there?

Nope. I have some fishing weights but finding one the right size sounds like a long shot. I don't reload don't have dies. I'll ask at the local store next visit. See if someone has 30 cal led bulits. If it's bulged it's done right.

It doesn't have to be that close. Squish it close to the right size. The lead will be soft enough that it will push through. You do need a decent rod though. You'll also be able to measure the diameter once it's through.

Once the bore is clean check for a bulged barrel.
~ Look thru the bore, slightly oiled helps. You are looking to see if there is a dark ring, if present this will be a shadow where the light does not reflect off the bore.
~ Look/feel the outside of the barrel. You are looking for the outside of the bulge.
~ Run a snug patch thru the bore. Try to feel if any areas feel like the patch is moving easier. This can indicate a bulge.

~~ A bulge in the middle of the barrel may not affect accuracy. A bulge at/on the muzzle almost always will. Pay special attention to the last inch of bore.

If the bore is truly clean it may be too clean to produce accurate groups. You may need to shoot half a dozen cartridges to foul the barrel enough to provide a consistently fouled bore. This is normal.

I'll spend some time with it tonight and do the suggestions.i should get a better rod. One that rotates with the rifling better. It groups not to bad. Still key holing. I did get a couple of round holes last time but mostly keyholes. $2 a hole:)

Don't see or feel a bulge. I broke the rod ordered a one piece with a bearing. Should be able to follow the rifling better. See if it stops following anywhere along the bore. I'll dig through the tackle boxes and get some lead ready. Tried some old full jacket 147gr that I had. That's the fmj top right. Worse than the jacketed soft points. Used some 150 and 180 not much difference. Ill see if I can find some of the ammo mentioned earlier in the thread. What are some flat base rounds that won't break the bank.

Thanks I'll look for those. Had a thought or a question. What would cause a scratch near the muzzle like the one in the previous pictures. It's a stainless barrel. So probably not a copper brush. And probably more in the bore.

Given only 59 of these made it to the light of day, a rebore isn’t something I’d be looking at just yet. Kind of fun making an irksome rifle work, too. If you handload, a .3105 flat base 7.62x39 bullet would be its best shot, as per Mig’s suggestion. Go light, ideally a starting load for a heavier bullet, with H4895 (safely down-loadable powder).

As for the scratches who knows, probably somebody cleaning aggressively in the past as they figured it had to be fouled as it wasn’t shooting. Bet you’re not the first guy who’s been confounded by it. :)

Worst case I'll figure out how to change the barell and keep this one. I have too much invested in 308. Not a lot by some standards but a lot for a poor guy lol. Been looking at reloading if that's what it needs. That would work with my plan. Are Mauser barrels available. Probably has to be from Canada

Are those groups at 100?

Kind of nuts how tight they are considering the sideways bullets

About 45 yards. Best I could do in our clearing. Haven't dialed in the scope yet. I can setup a hundred yard range but I have to put critters away. Wanted to get nice holes first

It’s cheaper to just buy a Mauser, they’re readily available in comparable configs for around $450. Cheaper than getting a barrel, and this one can stay original.
Makes sense. About what I paid for the Israeli re barreled mauser. Never priced new barrels.

Update so far my friends. No break through. Shot some flat base 150gr Hornady whitetail. Flew wild got worse with each shot. Used six rounds. Got some brass incase I start reloading. First shot was a bit of a keyhole way off target. Remaining shots were full keyholes all over the place. No need to print off more targets. Got a new rod with a bearing. Put a flag on the end. Starts spinning right after the chamber pretty much to the muzzle. Still have to try the lead ball. Cleaned with sweets no signs of copper. Eye balling the bore looks good. Getting ready to buy a bore scope.

Ordered a bore scope. Not sure how to pour a chamber cast. Shot some 110gr federal today. Tumbling all over the place. I'm thinking I'll need to lap the bore. Thinking there are burs. I'll find out when I get the camera. In the meantime what's an easy way to remove any burs. Or what are the ways. Compound on the bullet and shoot the burs polish the bore?

Barrels fouled or worn out… something. Lapping will just wreck whatevers left. Do some reading on the marlin forums about micro grove rifling. Stop wasting money shooting jacketed bullets and don’t buy a Chinese borescope, pretty much any borescope will give you more questions and doubts than answers.

Go see a reloader you trust, clean the barrel properly and shoot some cast bullets. https://www.brownells.com/tools-cle...ers-cutters/cerrosafe~-chamber-casting-alloy/.

You probably could of paid a decent smith by now to figure it out
