Vintage Marlin 455 bolt action Mauser

Money is not wasted on a borescope. Not like they are $1000.

Guess it’ll help him see those burs. Chinese crap should be so far down the list of suggestions for someone starting out. You gonna interpret the crap pictures for him?

Ordered a bore scope. Not sure how to pour a chamber cast. Shot some 110gr federal today. Tumbling all over the place. I'm thinking I'll need to lap the bore. Thinking there are burs. I'll find out when I get the camera. In the meantime what's an easy way to remove any burs. Or what are the ways. Compound on the bullet and shoot the burs polish the bore?

I’d say that registers that barrel as a lost cause, as said above lapping would destroy it completely.

Alright lapping is out. Maybe using the wrong term. Yeah I could take it to a gunsmith. What's the fun in that. I've shot more than I have in a long time kinda like it. It's a puzzle and a challenge. I'll wait for the scope and get a better look at the bore. Here's another crappy cell phone pic for now. I'll follow up once I get more information and pictures of inside the bore

Barrels fouled or worn out… something. Lapping will just wreck whatevers left. Do some reading on the marlin forums about micro grove rifling. Stop wasting money shooting jacketed bullets and don’t buy a Chinese borescope, pretty much any borescope will give you more questions and doubts than answers.

Go see a reloader you trust, clean the barrel properly and shoot some cast bullets. https://www.brownells.com/tools-cle...ers-cutters/cerrosafe~-chamber-casting-alloy/.

You probably could of paid a decent smith by now to figure it out

Some of the scopes are pretty expensive. This one is $80 shipped so not that much. Tools are good to have. This exercise has got me looking at reloading. Your comment about cast bullets for micro groove is interesting.

Still working on this. Found something interesting in the bore. Pretty sure I have most of any fouling out. About the middle of the bore and for less than 6" there are some marks that to me look like factory. The spacing looks perfect. Anyone come across or know if its made that way. Rest of the rifling looks ok. Better than some of my other rifles. I lapped the crown. looks like I got rid of some burrs judging by the scratches on the tool. Also made some bullets. Still waiting for some parts for reloading but I have a friend who will load them up. Going back to the clearing maybe Sunday.

Guess I need gas checks. Got some coming. Also a shell holder. Thought I had it. Sheesh everything has a different shell holder. Got a brass trimmer held up in Canadian customs. Hold on

The marks in the barrel are factory but are not intentional. That is your classic defect. The barrel was poorly drilled and reamed. Not sure of the manufacturing method that would allow the perpetuation of the defect in the grooves and on the lands. I would like to know the diameter of that barrel.

Pretty deep im thinking if its in the grove. Don't have a proper gauge to measure the bore. The cast bullets won't go in and didn't want to push hard
