VZ-58s and more...FAQs are Post 1

Q: Considering this monster thread, what do you think of the VZ-58 type rifle?

  • It is a beauty as it comes, and a must have, since it drives Libs bonkers.

  • It is best pimped out and dressed up, a far cry from an NDP convention.

  • It is true it was the first cool gun in the Cdn. market for a long while, but I'll pass.

  • It makes me think of snide remarks, as I am a gun snob and the 58 is affordable.

I'm a welder, and personaly that looks like a fun jigsaw puzzle.

As politely as I can say this....ANY form of the Kalashnikov (AK-47, AKM, AK-74, etc.) is not the same as the vz.58. They are entirely different designs. I have fired many AKs (including a 5.45), and they are fun, but this is apples and oranges technically.

Compare...

The top two are Kalashnikovs, the bottom a vz.58. Yes it is top loading. That stock is actually comfortable, but a side folder is available. Look at this thread, there are a hundred photos of that one. The 58 is striker fired, the AKs hammer. The 58 uses a locking system more like a Beretta pistol than the rotary AK system. The gas piston systems are different. The receivers are made differently.

Does anyone have a photo of what this rifle looks like with the real wood furniture?

I have come across some real wood furniture available for it in the U.S. for sale, but I cannot seem to find any photos.

Maybe duracoating is the way to go, the photo you posted looks pretty good in all black.

What do you think of mounting an ACE folder on this rifle?

It would also be interesting to find some of that black furniture such as the handguards and/or grip that may fit, like the Galil style.

They may require some modifications though, possibly making it difficult.

I suppose I just do not really care for the original furniture on this rifle, but as the rifle is no longer an original collector piece (now that it has the longer barrel etc) ... so any mods at this point are an improvement in my opinion.

Does anyone have any suggestions for mods to the handguards or grip that may work?

Now I am LOOKING for a photo.

In the 1981 James Bond film For Your Eyes Only - one of the henchmen fires an Sa 58 when Agent 007 Roger Moore escapes from Hector Gonzales' villa.
