About Mags And Pistol Grips
Gents, I was sorry to witness a series of disagreements between
2 respected senior members, residents of this thread
It was about what kind of front pistol grip works the best with vz58
This thing can easily degenerate into death threats (openly in the public or through PM)
or even a punchfest
So, I feel obliged to bring my wisdom and expertise (again!
) to the table
and try to make them understand they are brothers in arms
WTF was I talking about? Oh, yeah, magazines…
So, on the VZ and other guns, when taking it out (or putting it on)
the mag has to be tilted, in such a way that it might interfere with
a vertical pistol grip on the front handguard.
That is, if the lower extremity of the pistol grip might be in the way of the mag.
So, the solution suggested by member Deckard
is “bending” the tip of the grip forward
I know it works.
If you allow me a quote from the classics
So, in the 60’s, Romanians did this. At the first sight, everybody looked crossed
at the odd-looking AK
After some 30 years, other AK producers, Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland, and even Russia
admitted the little curved pistol grip works.
I used one like that for years in FA competitions and I can testify that there is not any
interference between mag and front grip.
And please keep in mind that the geometrics are a little different, the original Romanian
military AK mag is 32 rounds (very hard to find on this side of the ocean).
I even tried it with Romanian RPK mags (42 rounds) and it does not interfere.
So, to say it once again, Deckard is right in what he says about the
curved (and fixed) grip.
Now, pimp Palinak comes in the ring with these:
As you can see, the pistol grip is on a rail
and this allows mounting the grip as much forward as he can.
I have to testify that I tried some of Palinak’s guns in real life and
the solution works.
Like anything related to speed and routine, there is no secret
to the fact that you have to practice, practice, practice.
And he does it with the tandem mags (put together in “69”)
the mag that is not in use stays offset on a side and cannot interfere
with the pistol grip.
Here he comes again and uses a folding pistol grip
when you want to change mags, simply fold the damn thing and it’s out of the way.
I would even try this mounted backwards, like here,
if you allow another example from classics
It was put on this gun not for clearing the mag, but for making the gun compact.
(And before Deckard screams “airsoft”, let me assure you that the rifle in these pics it’s
AUNT GRETA herself.
Here she is naked, in case anybody knows how she’s supposed to look like
with her pants down)

So, who is right?
I think both of them are right in their own ways.
Ultimately, use whatever floats your boat.
And don’t forget the thing with “practice, practice, practice”,
if you want to be able to change the mags fast.
If you see these two guys acting like they want to fight again, call me
