VZ-58s and more...FAQs are Post 1

Q: Considering this monster thread, what do you think of the VZ-58 type rifle?

  • It is a beauty as it comes, and a must have, since it drives Libs bonkers.

  • It is best pimped out and dressed up, a far cry from an NDP convention.

  • It is true it was the first cool gun in the Cdn. market for a long while, but I'll pass.

  • It makes me think of snide remarks, as I am a gun snob and the 58 is affordable.

About Mags And Pistol Grips

Gents, I was sorry to witness a series of disagreements between
2 respected senior members, residents of this thread:runaway:
It was about what kind of front pistol grip works the best with vz58:confused:
This thing can easily degenerate into death threats (openly in the public or through PM)
or even a punchfest:eek:

So, I feel obliged to bring my wisdom and expertise (again!:) ) to the table
and try to make them understand they are brothers in arms:p

WTF was I talking about? Oh, yeah, magazines…:D

So, on the VZ and other guns, when taking it out (or putting it on)
the mag has to be tilted, in such a way that it might interfere with
a vertical pistol grip on the front handguard.
That is, if the lower extremity of the pistol grip might be in the way of the mag.

So, the solution suggested by member Deckard
is “bending” the tip of the grip forward

Well, he is right.
I know it works.

If you allow me a quote from the classics
ak_rom_26.jpg

So, in the 60’s, Romanians did this. At the first sight, everybody looked crossed
at the odd-looking AK
After some 30 years, other AK producers, Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland, and even Russia
admitted the little curved pistol grip works.
I used one like that for years in FA competitions and I can testify that there is not any
interference between mag and front grip.
And please keep in mind that the geometrics are a little different, the original Romanian
military AK mag is 32 rounds (very hard to find on this side of the ocean).
I even tried it with Romanian RPK mags (42 rounds) and it does not interfere.

So, to say it once again, Deckard is right in what he says about the
curved (and fixed) grip.

Now, pimp Palinak comes in the ring with these:
palinak said:
Well, he is right too, in my opinion.
As you can see, the pistol grip is on a rail
and this allows mounting the grip as much forward as he can.
I have to testify that I tried some of Palinak’s guns in real life and
the solution works.
Like anything related to speed and routine, there is no secret
to the fact that you have to practice, practice, practice.

And he does it with the tandem mags (put together in “69”)
palinak said:
I didn’t use this with a vertical grip, but I think there is a trick,
the mag that is not in use stays offset on a side and cannot interfere
with the pistol grip.

Here he comes again and uses a folding pistol grip
palinak said:
If you are not in a rush, you can put this anywhere on the rail,
when you want to change mags, simply fold the damn thing and it’s out of the way.
I would even try this mounted backwards, like here,
if you allow another example from classics

AUG_06_2.jpg

It was put on this gun not for clearing the mag, but for making the gun compact.
(And before Deckard screams “airsoft”, let me assure you that the rifle in these pics it’s
AUNT GRETA herself.
Here she is naked, in case anybody knows how she’s supposed to look like
with her pants down)

So, who is right?
I think both of them are right in their own ways.
Ultimately, use whatever floats your boat.
And don’t forget the thing with “practice, practice, practice”,
if you want to be able to change the mags fast.

If you see these two guys acting like they want to fight again, call me:p

About Mags - Part II

I will try a personal opinion about the mags.
I went shooting with Palinak. Damn pimp has a s**tload full of mags,
all for personal use.
If he robbed the magazine truck, I don’t know and I don’t care.
Most of them are in almost new condition,
since he uses all of them, by “rotation”.
So, I used most of them in some of his rifles (also in good condition).
They are tight into the receivers,
because of the paint on the sides of the magazines.
When you try to take them out, after you operate the mag release, they can tilt forward, but do not always come out easily.
So, you can have the tendency to believe they didn’t disconnect and instinctively, you try to tilt more. Eventualy you will "pry" it out, but in the process of doing this, the mag can reach the front grip. That is why the perception that the mag interferes with the grip.

Few weeks ago, a young kid wanted to borrow a Dremel tool from me.
I said “sure, what do you need it for?”.
He said that he wanted to grind his vz receiver  so the mags can be changed easy.
When I heard that, I tried not to smack him over his head with the Dremel - because it’s an expensive and delicate electric tool and can be easily damaged;)
But as you'll see, the damn kid wasn’t very far off. I asked him to bring me his rifle and mags.
I put a mag in the gun and I put some tape around the part of the mag which was sticking out of the receiver to make sure that I do not take more paint off than necessary.
I took the mag out and I started to file (not grind) the paint and
trying the mag often in the receiver.
Few strokes with the file, then try it to see how it fits.
If you pay attention, you can see where it rubs, so where to file more paint.
The receiver had some paint too, but I decided not to take it off.
By the time I did all 4 mags, the kid arrived with the case of Heineken,
which we shared according to our age.

Well, that was my personal experience with the mags.

If you do this, try to file, not to grind. No sand paper.
It can put abrasive particles between the moving parts of the gun.
Also, resist the little voices in your head urging you to file the receiver.
File only small amounts of paint, clean the dust and try the mag in the receiver.
Take evenly from both sides of the mag.

:)

Deckard is never happy. He'll make comments and cry and ##### all the time no matter what you do:dancingbanana:

On the other hand I find hard to believe a comment like that one with PC of this site comes from the foremost advocate of the troll control:D

So, Ljungman, you posted this here to see if anybody notices the left side ch. handle, is that correct?:D
Well, me, for one, I didn't until I read your other thread...
