  • It makes me think of snide remarks, as I am a gun snob and the 58 is affordable.

That is frikken hilarious

I wouldn't worry too much about the composite stock. They seem to have stood up pretty well in 40 years of military use.
Regardlsee, wood stocks are available, and you could always paintt the thing if you really didn't like it.

I think the resin composite stocks are better than the wood ones, they just don't look good because they are not finished. Pretend it's wood and finish it with tru-oil, and you would be surprised at the difference. I certainly would not trade my resin stock for wood.

i have owned every type and model of the sks rifle that have been imported to canada over the past 15 years. I like my chinese sks's, they are rugged and most have been flawless in fuction after many hundreds of rounds. I have never had to buy ONE single replacement part for any of them. MY CZ..... have only owned one, it had feeding issues right out of the box, sent it back, got a new one, gas rod stuck after 20 rounds. sanded er down for better fit and she was fine. Still if i had it all to do over.... I would have bought YUGO's from day one. This will be one of my favorite sks models for years to come. Personally, I don't get the hype about the CZ nor the price, the Yugo, sure worth every penny. SKS bang for your buck, in my opinion wins out every time.

I've been debating getting an 858 .......or for the the price of the 858 get 3 cases of ammo (3420rds) and a trigger job for my SKS (maybe even a 'tech site' (surplusrifles.com to see) also). I like the SKS, but also like the 858 AK heritage/look. Hmm....maybe all that shooting will quench my needs to get an 858.....maybe not. What's a guy to do?

Well, to add some fuel ot this fire, I repaired my faulty trigger group, and took the CZ out shooting today. She worked flawlessly until the trigger group crapped out again.

I know what is going wrong, but I have no idea why it is doing it, or what's causing it.

In my personal opinion, my 858 shoots much better (for me) than any SKS I have tried or owned. It is unfortunate that it is having trigger problems at the moment. I think I will bring it to a gunsmith, as I do not have the knowledge to solve this problem and since I have fiddled with it and replaced the FCG, I probably voided the warranty too.

All in all, I personally prefer this rifle to an SKS. There are some who like the SKS better, some don't. The good thing is they both shoot the super cheap 7.62x39

you have avery valid point with your last statement... 7.62 x 39 is so fun no matter what pipe yer sendin it down. hehehe :D

Here's a guy who knows what he's doing... :D

PS, the 858 deffinately has the cool factor, but as for a shooter a Yugo is almost impossible to beat for the price. I would have paid $800 for my 59/66 and been happy if that was the going rate rather than the $330'ish they are, glad they are so undervalued.

45ACPKING,

How's the trigger on the Yugo SKS compare to the Chinese SKS (earlier military units)? Wondering if I shoud trade up my Chinese for a Yugo, or just get some trigger massaging done on the Chinese.
THanks

The trigger on my 59/66 was pretty horrible -- i don't know what the Chinese ones are like.

It was long and very gritty out of the box, so I took it apart and stoned the contact surfaces -- now it is pretty smooth but still heavy and a mile long; sort of like a DA revolver. I much prefer the SMLE style 2-stage setup for a milsurp trigger.

the chinese sks's have had varying trigger operation from stiff as hell to almost hair trigger hehehe.
My Yugo was fully customized a year ago , the trigger was less than to be desired that's for sure. long and stiff. she is nice and smooth with a good crisp trigger break now. not sure how many lbs it breaks at. My smith did wonders though.

I figure both are par for preformance.I have had an SKS,SKS-D,(both Norcs) and now I have a VZ58(shorter CZ858 for those who dont know) I like both the same for what they are. They both dont compare to the performance of the AR's,Sigs,or H&K's.I like my VZ over the Norcs because it looks cooler!! If there is any difference in the performance between the two,it would be very slight!! I believe the VZ barrels are chrome lined where as the SKS is not.I guess that means it may last longer against all that corrosive ammo!!LOL!!!

Marstar is getting some M59's soon. The customer service rep said that in about 3 months they will have more. My time will be soon.
Then I can practice shooting all day long.

My 2 cents:

It shouldn't be about do you buy a sks or a cz/vz-858, it should be more like...

I took my sks and my cz/vz-858 both out today!!! :D

Yes Ceska, that is the more desired scenario:) . I wouldn't sell my SKS as I've never had any problems with it, and for what it costs, it really is a good rifle. I still want an 858, guess I'll tell the wife they're only $350 ;) .
