Walmart ammo buying experience

I worked in a walmart a few years ago. No the employees do not have to have a PAL to handle the ammo. I know i know....yes they do your wrong murph83....hold on a sec. Manager told me when i worked there that apparently they dont have to, some sort of clause. I called bullsh*t to his face and told him that an undercover cop could walk in and try to buy ammo and find out that employees dont have PAL and it would be a big mess. Manager didn't seem to care, so i made a point to tell every person i could find that worked in the sporting goods dept the potential problem they could find themselves in. Didn't take long before i was getting paged 3-4 times a shift to go over and handle ammo puchases because i had my RPAL\PAL. Things may have changed since my time with the company.

They have cheap 410 ammo at some walmarts. IIRC it was something insane like 9 dollars a box for winchester white box there.

One near me had hollowpoint .22 ammo at 4.50 a box during the gopher induced shortage last year.

And yes I had to wait for a guy with a key and ask 2 people to help me.

And though I no longer live in Vic my first thought was "the uptown walmart sells ammo?".

I needed some 2 1/2" .410 for a vintage double barrel I picked up this summer. That was one of the types of "left over" ammo that the Walmart near me still has. I think they've had it on the shelf for at least 5 years, maybe longer. $11.00 a box for the white box Winchester. I was at the mall so I picked up 2 boxes. Don't know if it's because it's old or hard primers or cheap Winchester or what, but they would not work in the hammer gun I picked up. Had to shoot each barrel 3 or 4 times before they would go off. And by looking at the primer indentations, they should have fired on the first shot. So tried them in a more modern gun. Same thing.

The requirements for employees to have PALs vary depending on the nature of the firearms business activity. If you do not handle firearms and only ammo, the employees do not require PALs. They do need to verify that customers purchasing ammunition have in their possession a valid PAL. Yes, I do work at a store that sells ammo only, and I was involved in preparing the business license application.

From the RCMP Firearms Website @ http://www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/cfp-pcaf/fs-fd/fab-eaf-eng.htm

Employees do not need a firearms licence if the business has restricted or prohibited weapons, prohibited devices or prohibited ammunition but no firearms. However, they need to be eligible for a firearms licence. In other words, although they do not have to submit a licence application, they must be able to pass a background check and there can be no court orders prohibiting them from possessing firearms or other regulated items.
Certain people connected to the business will also need to be eligible for a licence. These include:
Owners and partners;
Directors and officers of the corporation if the business is a corporation;
Persons in a relationship to any of the above if they have a direct influence on the business or could have access to firearms held by the business.

Cheers,
-DF

P.S. Corporate Policy, however may differ and restrict keys to license holders and or management, so you never know what you are gonna get.

Was in the local wally world tonight . Decided to see if they had any .22 ammo. Noticed they had Bucket o bullets in stock for a decent price so I decided to get one. Asked passer by employee if they could give me some ammo out of the case they reply with "No because hunting is bad" then laughed it off and said "just kidding, I will page someone for you". 5 minutes later no associate. Asked the next employee to page someone, 5 minutes later still no associate. Asked another employee to page someone, another 5 goes buy and still no luck. Stopped another employee and said, been waiting a while could you please call a manager? Finally after a few more pages a manager comes by and I ask her for the bucket o bullets, her reply was "bucket o bullets?" "how many bullets come in a bucket?" I said about 1400 I think. She says "What are you an American?" WTF?

That's pretty normal for Walmart.

Its walmart. What did you expect?
As posted staff member must have PAL. From what I know working at CT, you need it.
So out of 100 staff members how many have PALs. My guess is 2 maybe 3 at most.
Atleast you got your ammo!

Well I worked in a CT in 2009 and a person per shift had the keys in the sporting goods dept. No need for a PAL.
Also never in my training someone told me I needed to check a PAL for ammo, I knew it but nobody mentionned it.

Also when I went to wally world to get 2 boxes of 100 rounds of target shotshells I waited over 35 mins to get a ####!ing associate.
He also gave me a weird look like I would go and kill baby seals with that... I took the lead and told him it was for clay shooting and each round was 25shells.
He looked relieved and went his way.
ignorance causes fear.

Because his last shift was in the McDonalds kiosk

Speaking of the 100 shotgun shell packs at Walmart , there has been a big price increase.....the price went from 33 per carton , up to 43 when I was in yesterday....ammo prices are going crazy....

Walmart sucks, it's owned by one of the richest families in America, they sell Chinese junk, and treat the employee's like slaves.
I don't care how cheap the prices are, I won't buy #### all there.

They treat their employees no different than any other big box store...

I had a similar experience. Was picking up shotshells, took over 30 minutes to finally get someone over there after asking the girl at electronics to page someone like 5 times. The final time i asked her to page management. Manager told me the person working in the department was outside collecting carts in the parking lot. I #####ed about how long it took, and she gave me $10 off.

I had a similar experience buying a wardrobe there. It was too heavy to lift myself, so i asked for help. After 30 minutes I went straight to customer service and demanded the manager, who promptly gave me the $128 item for $99 after i #####ed about my service.

well at least you got discount...

me I just got a look of disgust for buying ammo... lol

Did you ask for a discount? It never hurts to ask... It strikes me as a bit odd that you would get such a response though. I live in Greater Vancouver, and have bought ammo at quite a few of the Walmarts around here and never once did I feel any negative vibes from the staff... Hell, that would be one more reason for me to go ##### at the manager and demand a discount because their staff is a bunch of judgmental #######s...

Last time I was I wally world was when they cleared out the Winchester dynapoint 500 boxs of .22, for $6.50 a box of 500. Yah I know ten years ago. Almost broke a cart wheeling four and a half cases up to the front. Was escorted to my vehicle. Still have 15 boxes of 500 left, let the kids shoot it. Was great bulk ammo!!!
