What a shotgun is supposed to do!

Laugh all you want.

We're here for a frank discussion aren't we?

I have my principles, you have yours.

We could be friends. We just have diferent opinions.

That's what makes the world go round.

I agree 100%. If everyone thought like me I would never learn anything.

Shoot what ya got at what ya want. I have an old pump I use for trap, shot a PITA event with it. Do I want a nice O/U, you bet and I will have one ... one day .. but for now I use what I have. If all I had was a short little defender, that is what I would use for hunting and trap. I certainly wouldn't take anyone to task for not using something I deemed appropriate. And just where the hell is HNACHJ in all of this ?? Drops a crapper of a post and doesn't reply to anyone elses point of view ... maybe he just understands now ... Label him as #### disturber and ban him if he doesn' have the decency to post replies to a thread he started.

Henry's impressed with himself because he writes in a magazine and shoots FITASC. I guess he'd figure that would be enough to start making bold pronouncements about what shotgunning is and isn't. Pretty presumptuous from a middle-of-the-pack C Class shooter who isn't going to be sharing podium space with Digweed, Bidwell, or Cherry any time soon.

The clay target community in this country isn't that large and Henry and I have some mutual acquaintances. If you ask around about him one of the more polite phrases you'll hear is "legend in his own mind." It seems he's dedicated to proving the point here too.

Henry,

Why stereotype? With so much diversity available to us today why should one restrict himself/herself. Bottomline, if it makes any person happy to move away from monotony via pursuing a variety of interests in the shooting sports - there is absolutely nothing wrong with that at all. The more we promote the stronger and bigger community of legal firearms owners we become.

If you think about it......the World wouldn't be at this stage of progress and development if we humans only sought to stick to what we started with at the begining of time :)

I have shot deer with my Brobee 14" shotgun with slugs......

Tactical and Practical....its the perfect gun for the dogger!!

I went to this skeet and trap range in Richmond B.C. a few times and all I had was my black Mossberg 500. I did pretty well busting up clay pigeons with it and I was having fun.

Then this two old farts came over and started lecturing me on how I am what's wrong with the world, who needs this kind of "gang banger" type shot guns and how just the butt on their guns where ten times more expensive than my whole shotty.

They stunk of booz and you could tell by their bulbous red noses that they've never turn down a glass of whiskey. Later I've heard that one of them has been a wife beater all his life. Don't know if it's true as I didn't know the guy who said it but the accused sure didn't strike me as a nice fella.

I was so disgusted with them that I've never gone back there and I have lost all interest in shooting trap or skeet.
Some days I wonder what might have happened if that had been the reception I'd received on that day many years ago when I showed up at the local trap club with my 18.5" Remington 870 pump gun.

Instead the dirty buggers welcomed me warmly, showed how the game was played, said my gun while not the best for trap was fine, let me try their guns some of which were very expensive and told me they expected to see me back next week.

Knowing I'd shoot better with a longer barrel I went out to get a longer barrel with tighter chokes, instead I found an 870 pump gun on sale for a little more than the price of a new barrel and bought it. Several months later I had an unexpectedly large income tax refund which went to a used BT99 and the madness began.:D

I don't know what would have happened if I'd received the same reception as Xman. I'd have had a lot less fun but would have a lot more money.

It's a risky business to make fun of anyone's gun no matter what they are shooting. They might just kick your ass with that gun you think so poorly of. Smarter shooters also know there are two very good reasons to welcome the new guys. The first is that's how we keep the sport alive but more importantly, given the fickle nature of target shooters towards their guns, without the new guys we'd have no one to sell our old guns to.;)

Very true words, Claybuster. The two drunks badmouthing a newcomer are far and away the very rare exception.

But what's wrong with never turning down a glass of whiskey?

Many of us, myself included would not be into any shooting sports if it wasn't for hand me downs, and discounted guns. :D
And for the record my Maverick 88 is the only gun I have bought new.

First off, nice shootin to the originator of this bizarre post.
Secondly Grouseman, I like that 'ah sh....' picture!
Thirdly, I started as a kid shootin .22 rimfire at gophers.
I've got shotguns now. For clays and for birds n pests up close. (including BadGuys) I've got Centerfire rifles for stuff far away, and revolvers and semiauto handguns at the range for punchin paper.... and now I've got an AR15 comin. Someday I'm gonna build one of those fourty foot long pumpkin  shooters. Why? Cuz they're ALL GUNS. And I love em ALL.

WE GOT ENOUGH ENEMIES OUT THERE... Do we really need more amongst us? Divide and conquer is a method that has been used SUCCESSFULLY against gunners for years. Respect your fellow gunnies. If you don't get it, time to open your eyes. Please. For YOUR shotguns sake.
Hang together lest we all hang separately.
Please?

Nothing, if you're willing to walk everywhere and your job allows you to carry a flask.

They drove there and you could smell hard booze on their breaths from 3-4 feet away.

"Why?

Honestly, I'm curious."

Because I wouldn't and don't point guns at humans or anything that even vaguely looks like one.

Hm. Personally, I have no issue with firing at paper; to me, an image and the thing it represents are two very, very different things.

Have you ever seen that Magritte painting of a pipe that's titled "Ceci n'est pas une pipe" [tr: this is not a pipe]?

I feel confident enough in my self-control and grip on reality that I'm not worried about any amount of target practice on silhouette targets causing me to suddenly shoot a human out of habit.

Indeed. There are days when I can't decide whether my shooting hobby is eating into my whiskey budget, or whether my taste for whiskey is taking a bite out of my gun and ammo budget.

The key thing is not to indulge in both hobbies simultaneously :).

Ditto. There are few people who enjoy their shotguns and their malt more than me. But I enjoy the shotguns first and the malt whiskey later in the day.

Reversing the order is just asking for trouble.

There's a joke in there about accidentally shooting your single malt, but I'm not sure I wanna make it; booze+guns=very bad idea.

MY DOG!!!!!!! :(

Greenhorse six's avatar reminds me of an incident in the army in basic where one of my course mates was doing about the same thing with a C1 A1 rifle at the range, fully loaded(the gun, not the guy). He caught a boatload of #### for it. I don't have enough nice guns to consider myself a gun snob. Although they're nice enough, I think. I am lucky to have only met the nicest of people during my trips to the range.
