What do people think of the 7mm WSM?

Never had a rifle in a WSM ctg but always thought if I did it should be a 7mm WSM.

NAA.

WSM, WSSM, SAUM, all are absurd and ridiculous, only serving to dupe the customer and thin their wallet with marginal gains, high cost, limited availability and poor resale value. Buy something that has some staying power and that you’ll be able to get ammo for in the future.

WOW ! :sok2 someone woke up GRUMPY with a lets SH*T on Fat Short Cartridges Attitude ! LOL :d RJ

To me it doesn't make sense why the 7mm wsm isn't as popular as the 300 wsm or the 270 wsm. The 7 wsm is a excellent cartridge in a short action, which is its only advantage over the 7mm remington. If your looking for a cartridge that fits into a light weight short action rifle the 7 wsm is a good choice. Its also very accurate in my experience. It has a little more powder capacity than the 300 and 270wsm.

In accuracy, velocity or both?

velocity

7mm WSM, Federal Fusion 150gr ~ 3100 fps claimed
24" Win m70 ~ 3134 fps

7mm WSM, Federal Premium 160gr Trophy Bonded Tip ~ 3000 fps claimed
24" Win m70 ~ 3100 fps

7mm Rem Mag, Remington 150gr Core Lokt ~ 3110 fps claimed
24.4" Tikka T3x ~ 2993 fps

7mm Rem Mag, Hornady American WT 154gr Interlock ~ 3035 fps claimed
24.4" Tikka T3x ~ 2744 fps

7mm Rem Mag, Federal Premium 160gr Nosler Partition ~ 2950 fps claimed
24.4" Tikka T3x ~ 2800 fps

7mm Rem Mag, Hornady Precision Hunter 162gr ELD-X ~ 2940 fps claimed
24" Sako ~ 2903 fps

7mm Rem Mag, Nosler TGLR 168gr ABLR ~ 2880 fps claimed
24" Sako ~ 2877 fps

in the rifles I have tested with factory ammo, the 7wsm blows the doors off the 7mm Rem Mag

This is my experience also... certainly in the consistency department... hard to draw any empirical conclusions from the dozen or so rifles I am comparing, but the trend is consistent enough that I am comfortable coming to that conclusion for my own purposes.

Ahh, so the unimportant one, lol.

I've never chrono'd 7 RM factory ammo, I've always handloaded for it and don't own any SM's but that's amazing, I wonder why that is?

They both have very similar powder capacity so any "blowing doors off" is likely only due to burn efficiency and more possibly slow vs. fast barrels in individual guns, as evidenced by your test results.

The Tikka seems to have a slow barrel, the Sako average, and the M70 a fast one......if one is to believe factory advertised velocities.
