What kind of mark up on guns

When the government makes it more complicated and onerous to import, sell and buy firearms, and combined with a small market you get higher prices.

There are many threads about this - most gun dealers probably make 5% to 10% if they are lucky and that involves a lot of work. A labour of love I think.

There's a big difference, as in most products, on the 'low end' versus 'high end' too. One could corner the market on Stevens 200's and XL7's (both very good rifles) in Canada and never make much of anything. Money is really only made on these types when customers buy other products with them or they come back for other business.

5-10%! are you kidding? Labour of love?! Holy s@*t man wake up! You think any of these guys would stay in business on 5-10% markups? Some brands more - some less but 20-30% is where its at. I've seen a couple of Popular retailers costs on firearms and believe me they do well.

And how much do you think they take home then?

If it was easy money, everybody would do it and prices would go down. However, not many small shops left, tells you something about how tight the margins are for them. perhaps WSS, BPS, etc can secure decent margins but look around their shops too and see how the clothing, boots, etc are now dominating floorspace.
I can only list a few 'non chain 'shops that are still in business, P&D, Prophet River, TSe, etc.

I am not suggesting that private gunstore owners are all becoming millionaires, I know this is far from the truth, however to think that they are in business to do you or I a favor or that it is merely a "labour of love" is far from the truth as well. Like suggested earlier in the thread some "bargain" brands,or lines of guns have little mark-up and rely on volume but higher end stuff more than "tows the line" for the lesser brands.

M/u

The mark up goes from 25% to 35% on new and 200%/300% on surplus. But then you have to factor time and cost. The time and cost of finding surplus items. The time and cost of purchasing and receiving. The cost of customs duties, export costs and transportation. The days of buying surplus guns for $2.00/$10.00 per unit are gone! Most new surplus guns on the market are un-importable to canada.

Here is a good one for you. I was offererd a brand new S&W M&P 15 for $1299 and I assume the dealer was still making a bit on that deal. Reg retail at most dealers is minimum $1499. Even if cost on the rifle was $1299 that is a 15% markup. I wanna say he told me the cost was just under $1200, but I cant remember for sure but that would be a 25% markup.

I'd like to think mark up is 100%, because you figure in rent, heating, hydro, labour, security, paper work etc... 10 % final profit seems ok.

Maybe they get you on the ammo and accessories?....

I am thinking net profit after all COGS are accounted for... I am awake thanks.

my local shop made 40$ on the their first Remington 597. 40 bucks thats it that was there mark up. i dont try to make bargains with them because they do a lot of work and imo they do a lot of work for the little money they do make from products.

Firearms are considered low mark up, often about 25%. That is, if the retailer bought from a wholesaler.
However, when they are big enough to bypass the wholesaler and get directly from the importer, or maybe even the factory, it could be that cost was about half of standard retail price.
Why just talk guns? That pair of pants you just bought cost the retailer not more than half of what he charged you. A 100% mark up is standard for clothes, shoes, fishing equipment, hardware, etc, etc,---

So their profit was 20% on a $200 rifle...

a $200 rifle? is that american wholesale prices? i was there when the cut the only box open, they had only 1 and it was 475$ i think. something close to that. there a small business but there the only one around and they know it.

So they didn't make $40....they made $275 HAHAHAHA.

A 597 is $190 @ Epps.
