What scope did you put on your M305?

Mueller 10x

Its awesome

I'm an iron sights shooter at heart, i struggle with optics.

Some say its because i haven't had enough time with them and its true. During basic, my C7's Elcan did the job fine but it didn't magnify all that much (3 times i think?) and i didn't stay in the forces long enough to get a ton of range time.

But now i've bought my M305 and altough i've yet to find a scope mount for it that isn't too expensive, and don't know enough to look at scopes at my local gun shop(s).

I bough this rifle as a gift to myself and to get back into shooting sports as well as hunting. Now the areas i hunt in are not very big. The area around the tree stand is between 100 and 200m so i don't need to be able to see a fly's ####### at 1000 yards :p

I have a 3x9 scope i use on my .22 but i heard that scopes made for rimfire don't handle the recoil of a bigger rifle very well thus i can't use it for that.

Help?

I have a Redfield 3-9x42 with the CASM mount with the see through porting... what I want is a new rear and front sight a different upper heat guard and the US coast guard muzzle brake for my M305

Here's a Redfield Revolution that I found on the EE. It's a 3-9x50. I like the quality at this price point.

I'm fairly new to non-knockoff optics. I've been using Dealextreme ones and only recently bought glass that cost more than my rifle. This is a Bushnell Elite 5-15 x 40mm with Weaver rings mounted to an M14.ca CASM rail:

My eyes are crap, and I can't see anything beyond 50 meters without magnification. This seems to work without breaking the bank too badly.

i rock the blackfeather stock, casm, nightforce rings and a trijicon accupoint 1-4x green.

such a cool hunting rifle :)

only downside of the trijicon is the 4x, it always depend what you want to do, i feel like its quite a limitation to have such a big reticle, and a not so great magnification. i should have went with a vortex 10x or something in that style, it would have been a better hunting rig. might end up buying the vortex and using quick detach rings on both these scopes. . . . . . . .we'll see

These questions relate to this thread and are meant to clarify things for OP as well as mine related to topic. Any thoughts on using a good QD mount with the casm or arms 18 on M14? I was thinking about using an ADM or Warne QD mount so I can switch different scopes between M305, SA NM Loaded, and bolt rifles depending on my task at hand, hunting, target, tactical or open sights. Is this even feasible with relative consistent accuracy or is it just best to have a dedicated scope on each rifle for best accuracy and consistency? For that matter is it even possible to use QD mounts on an M14 and not have FTE or other failure issues? I appreciate your thoughts because I want to get it right. I have an ADM QD on one rifle that I have my Leupold VX-R Patrol Firedot SPR on but would like to try that scope on other rifles too especially M14's. What kind of rail is best on a Savage 116 FCSS Weather Warrior for QD mount if feasible? Trying to find a universal system for all my rifles or potential rifles essentially to promote interchangability and versatility. Thanks my friends for any shared thoughts and experience. Merry Christmas!

Springfield Arms has a couple nice reasonably priced cheek risers or rests that do not alter your rifle in any fashion and a sale on right now.

My cheek riser is not available in canada (see post #26 from this thread on page 3). From all the ones I've seen, it's one of the best. it's rigid, tailored for the M1A/M14 platform AND, you don't have to drill the stock ! 90$+ship from ''Bradley Cheek Rests''

Here's an affordable scope similar to the Vortex below but more affordable from Weaver. http://swfa.com/Weaver-15-6x24-Super-Slam-30mm-Rifle-Scope-P40570.aspx

Vortex is a nice scope and all but for that kind of cash you can get an IOR with tactical turrets and more coolness factor.

Theyre available in Canuckistan from http://www.cssoptics.com/

I am in the same boat as you. I shoot irons and red dot sights.

I recently mounted a Vortex Razor HD Gen II 1-6x24 on my Crazy Horse EBR.
The optic & reticle are geared towards 3-gun competition, but I like it for 0 to 600 yards.
The extra large eye box makes it less of a struggle for me to get comfortable behind it.
I have it mounted on a CASM-S from M14.ca

The rifle deserves more magnification and I may move in that direction, but only after I have mastered this one.

Here's my $0.02.... I have the ARMS18 mount on one and the promag on the other. The ARMS18 suffered from the typical stuck case between bolt and mount. Tried all the fixes.. trimming springs, new springs, tuned springs but never solved it. I got a relief cut machined into it at work which solved the problem. I normally run TPS rings on the vast majority of my rifles and find them great. I have the ADM mounts on several AR's with good results but am now only trying them on .308's (RFB and XCR-M).

With regards to scopes I learned the hard way to stay away from Bushnell's though YMMV. I had a low end (~$300) bushnell last exactly 66 rounds before the reticle shook loose and the Elite had the Obj lens fall out all together. I now run Vortex HD's, a Viper (2.5-10x44) both with illuminated reticles and occasionally a Leupold on my M305's. Each have seen several thousand rounds without issue to date.

I guess the message here is that people are running a wide selection of optics on their M14 rifles. No surprise there however I do admit that the M14 suddenly gets really heavy after bolting all of these components on them. I'm of the belief that the M14 is best served using nothing other than open sights in order for it to be a practical platform. I'm running optics merely for load development. The ARMS18 remains on the rifle though even when I'm running open sights.

I use arms 22 medium height rings on my m305 with arms 18 mount. They even let you see a bit of the iron sights lol. I will probably be putting a Vortex viper pst 2.5-10x32 ffp mrad scope on mine.

I've kept my optics choice simple. I mounted a Leupold Vari X II 1-4x20 with a German #1 reticle....originally designed as a shotgun/muzzleloader scope but fits the bill perfectly for fast target acquisition on my M14S. The Smith Enterprise mount is rock solid and the scope just clears the rear sight with low rings so removal isn't necessary. I was a little worried about extra weight at first....but those worries were unfounded once I began shooting with the new set-up. Now I wouldn't dream of changing anything on my current set-up....the whole rifle just feels comfortable....as soon as my cheek makes contact with the stock...I have a prefect sight picture. My optics choice has aided in making my rifle fast handling, accurate and reliable....just as it should be.

Not for me

As far as practicality I dont consider it practical to carry a big heavy 308 if it isnt capable of sighting/shooting things as far out to where a 308 can. Like most non USMC trained folks Im not hitting anything at 500 with irons, or identifying targets. For practical purposes it looses its advantages over other platforms and becomes a harder hitting sks that is heavier and slower to shoulder. My m14 is a niche gun, I think of it as something that could do accurate sustained fire at a medium range like a DMR but can be pressed into shooting things 100 yards in as well. My plan is to set up multiple steel gongs in a field at varying ranges for some DMR-like practice in fact, not plinking at less than 100. when I think of irons/quick shooting/easy to carry there are a few guns in the safe Id grab first.

Fair enough :)
I don't disagree however I'm with H2O Man.

For my typical M14 carry needs I feel confident hitting a 12/59 with consistency using open sights at 500m however it has taken a fair amount of ammo and time to figure out how to do this. I see the M14 as an area shooting platform similar to the enfield - not for surgical precision. Those rear M14 sights are an engineering gift and I really like them. Actually I have my M14 scoped right now (see above) because I'm working on load development but as soon as I'm finished the scope and cheek piece come off. I really love these rifles. I've tried everything in its price class and I keep coming back for more M14 love...
