I'm an iron sights shooter at heart, i struggle with optics.
Some say its because i haven't had enough time with them and its true. During basic, my C7's Elcan did the job fine but it didn't magnify all that much (3 times i think?) and i didn't stay in the forces long enough to get a ton of range time.
But now i've bought my M305 and altough i've yet to find a scope mount for it that isn't too expensive, and don't know enough to look at scopes at my local gun shop(s).
I bough this rifle as a gift to myself and to get back into shooting sports as well as hunting. Now the areas i hunt in are not very big. The area around the tree stand is between 100 and 200m so i don't need to be able to see a fly's ####### at 1000 yards
I have a 3x9 scope i use on my .22 but i heard that scopes made for rimfire don't handle the recoil of a bigger rifle very well thus i can't use it for that.
Help?
My cheek riser is not available in canada (see post #26 from this thread on page 3). From all the ones I've seen, it's one of the best. it's rigid, tailored for the M1A/M14 platform AND, you don't have to drill the stock ! 90$+ship from ''Bradley Cheek Rests''
I am in the same boat as you. I shoot irons and red dot sights.
I recently mounted a Vortex Razor HD Gen II 1-6x24 on my Crazy Horse EBR.
The optic & reticle are geared towards 3-gun competition, but I like it for 0 to 600 yards.
The extra large eye box makes it less of a struggle for me to get comfortable behind it.
I have it mounted on a CASM-S from M14.ca

The rifle deserves more magnification and I may move in that direction, but only after I have mastered this one.

I'm of the belief that the M14 is best served using nothing other than open sights in order for it to be a practical platform.
These questions relate to this thread and are meant to clarify things for OP as well as mine related to topic. Any thoughts on using a good QD mount with the casm or arms 18 on M14? I was thinking about using an ADM or Warne QD mount so I can switch different scopes between M305, SA NM Loaded, and bolt rifles depending on my task at hand, hunting, target, tactical or open sights. Is this even feasible with relative consistent accuracy or is it just best to have a dedicated scope on each rifle for best accuracy and consistency? For that matter is it even possible to use QD mounts on an M14 and not have FTE or other failure issues? I appreciate your thoughts because I want to get it right. I have an ADM QD on one rifle that I have my Leupold VX-R Patrol Firedot SPR on but would like to try that scope on other rifles too especially M14's. What kind of rail is best on a Savage 116 FCSS Weather Warrior for QD mount if feasible? Trying to find a universal system for all my rifles or potential rifles essentially to promote interchangability and versatility. Thanks my friends for any shared thoughts and experience. Merry Christmas!
I guess the message here is that people are running a wide selection of optics on their M14 rifles. No surprise there however I do admit that the M14 suddenly gets really heavy after bolting all of these components on them. I'm of the belief that the M14 is best served using nothing other than open sights in order for it to be a practical platform. I'm running optics merely for load development. The ARMS18 remains on the rifle though even when I'm running open sights.
Not for me
As far as practicality I dont consider it practical to carry a big heavy 308 if it isnt capable of sighting/shooting things as far out to where a 308 can. Like most non USMC trained folks Im not hitting anything at 500 with irons, or identifying targets. For practical purposes it looses its advantages over other platforms and becomes a harder hitting sks that is heavier and slower to shoulder. My m14 is a niche gun, I think of it as something that could do accurate sustained fire at a medium range like a DMR but can be pressed into shooting things 100 yards in as well. My plan is to set up multiple steel gongs in a field at varying ranges for some DMR-like practice in fact, not plinking at less than 100. when I think of irons/quick shooting/easy to carry there are a few guns in the safe Id grab first.
