What's wrong with my RCBS scale?

I got a little-used RCBS 505 scale at the Chilliwack gun show last week.

I just set it up and tested it and it says a 140 grain bullet is 151 grains.


I set both right hand slide adjustors on zero to start, then put the bullet in the pan and it didn't tip until I set the left hand counterweight to 150 grains and the one right hand counterweight to 1.

What could be wrong?

Clean the arm pan and all other moving parts then place it on a level surface and then use the single front leg that screws up and down to zero it. This front leg adjuster will raise and lower the whole scale.
 
You may have to add a little weight to the pan holder. There is a little screw on the top of the pan that exposes a hollow cavity to which you can add a small piece of shot if you can't level it with the thumb screw. These are very good scales.

I think you have nailed it. No amount of turning the foot up or down works.

Unless the scale has been damaged, you should not have to add any weight to the pan holder.

Then either the scale is damaged, or someone that didn't know what they were doing messed around with the weights in the pan holder. Even if you adjust the weight in the pan holder to get it to zero, you will need to verify the scale with a verified test weight, and no, a bullet that is supposed to weigh 140 grains is not a verified test weight.

I set it up right and it won't zero with everything set to zero and adjusting the foot doesn't do a darn thing.
 
Not to be a smarty pants, but did you put all the slides to zero?
Posts some pictures of your set up.
Maybe we can see something out of kilter.

You did have the removable pan in place when attempting to zero the scale. It is bronze or copper in color, and just sits on the pan holder.

Well hold on there, I gave him the instructions. Let's at least give hime the benifit of the doubt, shall we?;)

I'll bet a coffee the pan is mis-matched: from a different scale. He said he bought it used. That would be something a newbie might overlook.
