That American Bison may have a different opinion. The 45-70. What a tidal wave in a tin cup.
Just added some for effectLol, this thread reveals that a couple years back, .416's of any description were thin on the ground. Fast forward to today; all the Kool Kids are posting threads here and elsewhere explaining how .22-cal superduper cartridges are the hot ticket for elk and other big game.
This is no longer a retail environment that favours the sale of big-bore cartridges. Today's hot-ticket shooting items are mouse guns...and, of course, laser rangefinders that read out to 5 km *with 1moa accuracy *
I’ve killed three of them with 7mags and a 280. They die easy. That American Bison may have a different opinion.
Historically speaking, hard to dis the .45-70.I’ve killed three of them with 7mags and a 280. They die easy.
I rebarreled many rifles to .416 Remington for customers... used Remington 700 and Sako actions, it's very easily done. You don't have to buy a "factory" chambered rifle.I've been on the hunt now for a rifle chambered in one of the .416s for some time but they seem impossible to find.
Since CZ discontinued their 550 line and Sako discontinued their 85 line, finding a rifle chambered in .416 Rigby/Ruger/ RemMag for under $3,000 has been a challenge.
As far as I'm aware the Winchester Model 70 and the Ruger Guide Gun/African are the only remaining choices that are supposedly still in production, however they are continually out of stock.
Are there any others that I'm forgetting?
I know there are rifles out there from Heym/Rigby/H&H etc. but they cost many 10s of thousands.
Is buying second hand my only option for this hunt?
This thread is historical.Historically speaking, hard to dis the .45-70.
