who here has imported ammo from USA?

I guess we have to say it again, it is illegal to export ammunition from the US without approval from the US State department. Just because you were able to bring it into Canada ie import it into Canada does not mean you are legal. I will say it again. It is illegal to self export ammuntion from the US without permission from the US State Department. It does not matter what Canada customs says. Canada customs is worried about importation...

As I have said before, a CGNer here, who use to do it for years, discovered that just because you did it and didn't get caught, does mean it is legal. He is banned from the US for 5 years....

why do I need the export permit, I am not the exporter......

never mind.....I give up, time to move on to another thread.....

as they say Google is your friend, all the info is out there, go forth and get it

Lets just say I have friends who are less than 15 minutes from Canada/USA borders

heck they even get gas cheaper.......

In other words, you are not talking about doing it within the laws of both countries.

People at my club just go to walmart and bring it over themselves. From what buddy told me, they don't even ask for so much as a drivers license.

If upon your return to Canada the DHS border patrol has a flash inspection set up, you are risking jail time or an outright ban from the states.

I have been writing very polite letters to the president, our prime minister, secretaries of state,DHS,to the head of the DDTC asking for a change in the laws, as well as pointing out that under the current system, it is not making any of us safer.

If Canadians with pals can buy ammo without showing id, then US and CDN gang bangers can do the same thing. It is currently easier for a Cdn gang banger to buy ammo in the states than in Canada.

This could all change if the first step in our security started at the retail level ensuring that ammo would only be sold to those law abiding citizens on both sides of the border simply by viewing a firearms license.

The USA doesn't have firearms liscences, we shouldn't have any, and I hope that the US never has any. It is the last bastion of freedom in the world.

Exporting ammo usa can't be done legally without using the services of a registered exporter. I believe that they have to have a federal firearms license or ffl. If you were to use the services of one of those guys, the cost of that service will not make it economical to follow through with the purchase. Just email one of them asking what it would cost for say 300rnds of 9mm. Here is an email link to Hurricane butterfly research group: Jason M. Wong <jason@hurricanebutterflyresearch.com> If it is cost effective, I will split the purchase with you.

No wait we can't do that. Because it is against the law to do a group purchase under one export application. It sucks I know.

Best suggestion that I could make to you is to write a letter to Obama, Clinton, Napolitano, and the head of the ddtc a MR Kovac.

I shouldn't be the only one who has written these people expressing our fustrations, and suggestions for secure improvements.

Good luck!

Ya, call big sis. She will get her TSA jackbooted thugs to molest you. Probably call you a terrorist(MIAC report) don't give them your real name. And call with a prepaid phone card. No, this is not a joke.

If you want to purchase in bulk maybe the best route is to contact a local firearms/ammunition dealer that already has the permits in place and negotiate a deal with them that they bring in an order for you for a percentage of the sale.

Seems much easier than trying to do everything from scatch and will probably cost about the same once you have paid for the permits, shipping etc.

what gives you that idea ???????

I already said legally

yes legally within the laws of both countries - OK :)

I guess what people are saying is that if you take it out of the states, your are the exporter from the US and importer into Canada.

I look forward to hearing how people are doing it legally since the export requirements are rather painful to process and in the end, it is not economically viable. Please due tell how your friends are doing it legally.

It's getting late and some ppl here are speculating on how much money it saves importing it or exporting when in reality they don't know the costs involved. Bottom line , most ppl bring it across the border illegaly(to American laws) and so do his friends I'm afraid. Gnight' gents. Morpheus the sentinels are approaching, we're about to fire the EMP, get out of the Matrix.:D

Let's try this again....

why do I need the export permit, I am not the exporter......
An export license is required by US law to export the ammo. You need to deal with a licensed exporter in the US to do this. This is going to cost you money.

Lets just say I have friends who are less than 15 minutes from Canada/USA borders

heck they even get gas cheaper.......
Utterly irrelevant if you intend to do this legally. The exporter is not going to hand the ammo over to your friends to drive across the border.

and there is the confusion, how can we be both the exporter and the importer

how can a Canadian export out of the US, we can only import into Canada

same as getting something from say Germany,,,,your not the exporter from that country, you are the importer into your own country

back to US, just get a FFL dealer who has an export permit

anyways like I said, the info is out there

it appears that most think the ammo we have here in Canada grew/produced here,,,,,nope, it was imported in from somewhere.....

we do have a few that do reloading here, but we are talking about factory ammo, not reloads...

anyways time to call it a night.....

The exporter is not running a charity. He incurs costs to legally export. He needs to cover those costs and make a profit. As the importer, that means you pay. It's not rocket surgery.

I posted two email address in earlier post. One to someone from the department of defense and trade controls, and the other for an exporter in the States who does exports of friearms and related goods to Canada.

Please email them, and let us all know whatthey tell you.

Sheesh, so many facetious posts...

There is a difference between EXPORT from the US and IMPORT into Canada.

A specific, individual export permit for the shipment has to be obtained from the US Department of state. To get that permit, (+/- $250, but might be less for ammo) the exporter must be a US citizen and have an annual export licence, cost approx $2800.

If you are shipping ammo, then it must go truck, and is very expensive to ship and broker it across the border. So to make it economic, you need to drive it across yourself, AFTER you have the proper US Export, and Canadian Import permit (IIC). This does not make you the exporter, it only makes you the shipper and Canadian importer.

You can bring in up to 5,000 rounds without a NRC import permit. Over 5,000 rounds, and then you need a NRC import permit and the ammo has to be approved by NRC or already on their approved list. (the NRC permit is a SECOND permit if you are bringing in more than 5000 rounds)

You can purchace and possess ammo in the US provided you have a hunting licence from any State.

I like how 'It's not worth your time' , 'To much headache' and 'Not worth it in the end'
But no one has said how to do it yet? So how do they know?

The OP already said he has the time and money...He just wants to know how to do it.
I have done something similar....ask a question, all you get here on CGN lately is all the experts that tell you how it can't be done because 'It's not worth your time' , 'To much headache' and 'Not worth it in the end'

Why can't someone just walk him through the steps and he can decide somewhere along the process if wants to do it.

i want to thank those who have tried to answer my question, this has helped clear up things. i will take this info and try to get bulk surplus 3006 up here.if i am successful ill post it. thanks again.
