Winchester Survival Shotgun

if you use bedliner, you should dust it with flat black krylon afterwards. as the raised bits wear itll look like the finish on a 700P.

I've fired it and it was sweet. I loved shooting it. I'm a bit of a recoil junky though. My dad and a friend both tried it but wouldn't use it more than once. I found it hurt a bit when I shot it but if I wore a glove, I was fine. I fired a shell of 00 buck and got all 9 pellets in about a 9" grouping at 15 yards right where I aimed(even though I have no sight).

Here it is on top with my DA Grizzly on the bottom.

SxS version?

Just wondering if anybody has done this with a sxs or o/u old, cheap shotgun (in 12 or 20). Would it be too heavy, I really like the winchester survival gun that this thread talks about.

hey Darrell, just wanted to echo the remarks of everyone here...
great job, great thread... you have inspired many
I, myself, have recently picked up a Cooey 840 that will soon look like yours (actually picked up 2 but the first one was so beautiful and in such excellent shape that I cannot get myself to cut it...plus my daughter loves the 36'' barrel and can't wait to shoot it)

A question for everyone if I may.
any thoughts/advice as to the design of the pistol grip?

is it just personal presentation likes or is there a relevance to amount of wood left on...ie: ergonomics, recoil buffer etc.

i tought about doing something like this,
only with an H&R handi rifle in 30-30

i always liked the Thompson Center Arms Contender pistol
in 45/70 that lance henricksen had in hard target

but since the tc contender is restricted,i could not bring it camping
in the woods.

by taking the little 300$ handi rifle ( maybe less if i find one used )

i could simply cut the stock into a pistol grip
( the barrel is already short at 22'', not worth it to cut it )

this could be a neat little non restricted pistol to bring camping
( moderate loads for plinking, hot loads for protection )

who thinks this could be a god idea ?
and who thinks i'm crazy or stupid ?

That little gun is so cool!! It sure got me thinking. I have an old Spanish 410 SxS that is never used and is not worth much. If I do that survival thing with it, will the barrels stay together?? I wonder if having two 410 shots is up to one 20g or one 12ga??

Lets revive this one for a minute.

I sold my project, so I figured I would do the proper thing and change the barrel length for the cert so as not to leave the buyer with it, WELL...what a hassle. She did not believe that winchester ever made a 37A.

I got every reason in the book as to why this was now illegal. This was now a restricted weapon...Which after I clarified with her how the law works. that A) this would not change the classification and B) it would then be a prohib, not restricted.

I've had to personnal explain how I cut the barrel, fax in documentation regarding my cut barrel...AND AS OF TODAY... I have to take pictures of it and email them directly to the tech who is assigned to it!!

Gimme a break, I cut the barrel down on Two rem 1100's and tac the crap out of them and it was nothing a phone call couldn't fix.

Worst of all, on more than two occasions during today,s phone call, she asked me to confirm the gun was unloaded and pointed in a safe direction. I was being spoken to like a perp on Flashpoint. I have registered and transfer quite a few guns in the last few years, and not once have I been spoken to like I was an idiot.

We'll have to see how they like the pics in the email. This is rediculous, the barrel measures 18 5/8., and they obviously don't believe me.

When I told her all the specs, she questioned the legality. I informed her I was aware of the laws. She replied..." I'm not going to give specific requirements , as I am not aware of the exact details." UHHMMMM..... wouldn't the laws be an important part of an RCMP organization?

rant off.

Well I went to a gunsmith who has been doing it for years and when I went to buy a barrel I was like well I want a shorter one for my gun but still keep it in unrestricted he was like hell Ill just cut it for you.. and since there is no training to be a gun smith... well you see the flaws to the system you have to take it to a gun smith ok.. well wait anyone could be a gunsmith..

1 thing I noticed was when it wasnt done by the rcmp it wasnt a hassle to regerster guns stuff like that but lattly when they switched its been a pain in the rear... they very agressive and full of miss information I was like ahh on your site im looking at its says this not what your telling me.. They wanted me to verfy a .22 rifle thats never been modded when I called I just said hell if its that much hassle I wont bother.. 2 second latter its regrestierd..

I had to take a shotgun to the local RCMP for barrel length verification recently.
The officer I dealt with was trained for verification and at first she suggested that I come back later to retrieve the gun. I then asked how long it was going to take to measure the barrel and she said I could wait if I wanted.
1 hour latter I asked to talk with the officer and she came to the front and said she was almost done but she was having trouble finding an FRT # for the barrel length, and had to create a new one.
15 minutes latter she came out gave me my gun and a written report of the verification.
I get home look at the number she wrote down and I'm surprised to see that it was not even close to my measurement! I check again and that's when I realize she has measured my barrel with the action open!
Back to the cop shop where I explain to her that it is necessary to close the action before measuring down the barrel......she agrees.
This time it only takes 15 minutes and she corrects the information on the same report she gave me with some white-out. I again compare her measurement with mine and find she is still off by about 3 mm. so I call the CFC and talk with a super friendly knowledgeable tech and he straightens everything out in about 5 minutes and re-registers it with the correct FRT number.
It would have been easier if I had just called buddy at the CFC in the first place.
Another funny thing with the "verification" officer was she had to get another officer to come and "clear" the gun to make sure it was empty?
I don't know why she was in charge of verification as she had no idea how a Rem 870 functioned....

wow, thats pretty disturbing.

good for you for not leaving your gun in their hands. i would never leave a gun there - a friend of mine did and never saw it again.

verifying and measuring barrels that are way over legal length is a sore point with me.i once asked a firearms center lady why i had to give a precise measurement of a barrel that was a least three feet long on a muzzeloader .her answer was that it had to be verified and that i could not cut any of the barrel off without notifying them . she did not have a clue about the subject and let on that she knew the law.i told her i could change barrels on my shotgun in less than a minute and that i did not have to notify them unless it changed the class . she was miffed to say the least .
