Would you hide a loan from your wife to buy a gun?

No, it's not right to lie. However, I don't believe the OP intended to lie - only fail to disclose. "Don't ask, and I won't lie." Trying to conceal the purchase is sneaky and deceptive, but so is a woman's manipulation. I wonder what the OP's spouse failed to disclose when she suggested he wait until after the cruise to purchase the rifle? Why is the wife so intent on saving? Has she disclosed all her long-term financial goals? Some women are misers (a self interest) - hoarding money at your spouses expense doesn't seem right either. There's a lot more to life than hoarding money. How can you put a price on the enjoyment a coveted rifle will bring for many years to come.

And since the OP is CF, he should receive a decent pension when he retires (depending on the number of years served, etc.)

Also, firearms do tend to hold quite a bit of resale value. They're not like a car that will be worth next to nothing in 10-15 years.

My wife hasn't a clue if I bring a new gun home or not... ;P

All of my rifles except for my XCR-L look the same they are all stainless steel black/gray laminate now and the XCR-L has a second upper that looks exactly the same and if the XCR-M ever gets here it will also be in OD green so she won't be able to tell them apart either...

:D

Well you guys were right. Scraped about it last night and this is what we came up with.

I can get the gun if she can spend on something expensive. And this is why I love her ! We are now flying down to Miami on friday to go on a 7day cruise.

Booya !

She just asked I wait till after the cruise to buy the gun.

If I hada known buying a expensive gun would come with a 7day cruise off miami I woulda done this a long time ago.

Sounds like a win to me. :D

Enjoy your cruise and new gun. :dancingbanana:

If the OP hasn't already made a decision, I'll pass on some family experience in this matter:

A member of my extended family chose to take out a loan and not discuss it with their husband/wife. Unfortunately, job loss occurred prior to the loan being paid off. The debt grew and grew, and phone calls started coming in, and the lies started to happen. It progressed to a point where their significant other told them that there was no longer any trust in the relationship. What do you think the end result of that was?

So, IMO, if the OP's relationship is worth a gun, then by all means buy the gun.

Happy wife is happy life, but that doesn't mean you have to sacrifice your own happiness. I've talked this over with my girlfriend, and we believe happy finances for when we're married is quite simple:

Dump all our pay into a shared account. From the shared account we will:
1) Pay for regular costs like mortgage, cars, utilities, food, toiletries, pet costs, etc.
2) Each month, put a little aside into a vacation bank account.
3) Each month, put an allowance amount into our separate allowance accounts. This number could be something like $300 a month. This would cover guns, ammo, range membership, clothing, or alternatively, makeup and $500 designer dresses.
4) Split the rest equally into two identical retirement savings plans, each under one of our names only, but with some inheritance provision for if one of us dies.

When both partners are involved in administering it, a spending allowance is a really fair and open way for a couple to manage spending.

We work on a similar formula except dump only 90% into a joint account and keep 10% back as fun money to not have to "TALK" about every little whim we have.

If the bills aren't getting paid or the joint funding formula isn't working then the formula need to be changed or joint decisions on what needs to be cut back on can be taken.

I am the sole income provider. She gets $10K cash per month to pay for everything we/she & kids needs/wants/household/bills etc. The rest is mine. Simple...

.......and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.......amen. ;)

Your CGN handle used to be the "pet" name I had for my daughter. As an infant, she'd lie on her back with her arms pumping in and out like you wouldn't believe, so I'd call her "Pump'n Squigs" which eventually became "Squigs", and then "Bumble-Bee".

No idea how you go from Squigs to Bumble Bee.

You people need rep on this forum.

$10K CASH PER MONTH!! I guess that's why you don't have a trader rating, you can buy everything new. What do you do for a living?

:D

Same here more or less... as long as the NUMBER of guns stay the same, there is no interest/distinction between them.

I also use this method with DLSR cameras. :)

What difference does it make?

How do you know what the people on this forum need? Besides, you would probably benefit the least - 10 posts since Oct 2010. Wow!

It doesn't matter. ?

And rep would be awesome here. I read a lot more than I post and rep is a quick way of when I "lol" to let someone know. I'm used to a board with rep. I keep looking for it here.
