New Long Range construction started

Wow, 280, I'm impressed. Hopefully I'll be able to shoot a match north of Calgary before my pension runs out. You going to Homestead June 7th / 8th?
Cheers

Electronic targets and the kit to run it all aren't any cheaper and not nearly as accurate as we'd like. We're fooling with them at Homestead. Great for a quarter chunk of wash tub at 900. Plus, who the hell want to piss with a friggin tablet in the sun all day. Keep it simple I say. What's going to happen when you got 50 shooters trying to figure what's up with the non-functioning system at the Prov's or other such affair. If electronics were that good; Raton, Phoenix, Scaremento, Camp Perry, Connuaght, Buttner would all have had them a long time ago.
Cheers

Guess it is better to spend half your day running a target frame. Or paying someone else to do it if you can find people.
I have used excellent modern military systems that converted me to electronics. Kind of like I am converted to shooting from covered firing points.

Longest Mile

Sounds to me like another plinker range. Check out the RCMP Range Construction Manual for an Out Door Gallery Range. Why don't you all put target butts in? Then you just level some dirt at the firing points you want and you're in business. Who the hell wants to see another hill and lake every 100 meters deal. Sounds like Genesee all over again but father out.
Cheers

So that would have been much cheaper to build.... People would still get there feet wet in the muskeg. A gallery has its own challenges and the biggest is to contain all projectiles on the range property. If you own all the land for the Safety template fore the 338 Lapua or the 50 BMG then a galley is a pice of cake. To this point the only one that I know of is a military one in ontario. Genesse needs to contain all the projectiles on the 1/4 section just like most ranges in the area and that is why all the back stops required. Check out the RCMP Construction Manual and calculate how may 1/4s you need to own the safety template for the 50 BMG. its like 6 km...

Sure hope some one can do something be hide this... Weather its old fashion or high tech. I herd of these target cams with apps for the i phone ect. They run on batteries? We are in the middle of nowhere so no power. Ideas are most welcome. only want to do it once and since this is our first try I am sure there will be lots of oops along the way. Might want to stick with old school for 1000m then high tech for 1100, 1200,1300,1400,1500 and 1600. That way lest traffic down range and the F class folks might be happy.

Longest Mile

Seems like I need to quit my job to be able to attend some meetings and sort this thing out. Then we'll be able to run some service rifle matches.

Well I would not quit your job but maybe book some time off to help out as another set of eyes can help. We need to plan a work bee if we want to shoot at this range this year. Lots of work left but if we get a few weekends in then we could maybe look at having Canada Day start with a bang. It may be a bit optimistic but will see what the CFO thinks in a week or two if we get some helpers on the projects. We are already releasing equipment so it will only cost more money to bring them back and start again. Which may be ok as we were going to be happy if we got the brush capered and some site prepping done. With added sponsor ship and good weather, excellent operators, we archive twice as much as expected.

I don't think you understand what butts are.

I spent 15 years chasing around north and central Alberta trying got get something started north of Homestead. I attended several club meetings at different locations, got onto the AFSS as an APRA full bore rep, and on and on but it just never seemed to go anywhere. From Ft Mac to Genesee to Smoky Lake to Provost to Czar to Wildwood. All of the locations I visited seemed happy with the berm and gong set-ups and were pretty much reluctant to shift the venues toward match style shooting. As a matter of fact, after expounding F Class to the northern shooters I ran into, very few showed any interest in Match Shooting, only one person ever came down and got involved. So you see 280, I just can't get that enthusiastic. After all, with the number of shooters around, there aren't that many that would shoot formal target rifle anyway, good range or bad. I believe what they'll do at Edson will be just what the local shooters want. No more no less.
Cheers

Some of what you said is true. BUT the majority of the shooters in the Edson club may be quite content with current range to all most 300... Only 5 mins from town. At the New range the medium range from 100 to 500m will most likely keep the ethical hunter occupied. I suspect new long range shooters will be born as some have already acquired new big high test calibers... The range in concept was built to fill the void for multi use facility and will continue as we gain some forward momentum. It will be far from perfect for everyone but it will offer challenges that no other range has. We will be looking forward to having an opportunity to have a 1000m match. I personally hope this will be the next venue for the ALBERTA LONG RANGE CHALLENGE or something similar.

I don't think you understand what butts are.

You are most likely right. This is the back side of the 1000m bunker. We were planing to have target holders slide above the blocks and dirt berm on the front side so the shooters can have there spotters mark the target. Then they can shoot the X. It will be a shady spot

if you have shot matches of this type and understand target butts please get on board with these guys right away and explain what needs to be done.

Here is the front view... You can make out the blocks at 1000 as the bunker has not been constructed.

TooFar, if you check out the APRA website at www.albertarifle.com, then User Groups, then Fullbore Target Rifle, at the bottom they have a short video that illustrates how things are set up and working at Homestead. If you have time, drive down on a match weekend and have a look around. We'd be more than willing to spend some time with you. Better yet, bring a rifle and take part in the New Shooter Clinic. I think the next one is July 13th. It's free and a bunch of fun. Plus, you really see how things work with lots of help to get you started.
Cheers

Yes, I shoot with Longshot, and Gunnerlove in the BCRA service rifle provincials at Chilliwack. I'll try to get something figured out for us. The current range is a total POS, and I'd hate to have this new one ruined as well by turning it into a plinker range. People pay good money to shoot matches, and money is needed to keep things maintained.

better yet for these guys is inviting their whole exec. board down for a day privately.that way they can have the whole thing explained to them including construction of the target frames etc. without time constraints.

We are using etargets at Connaught and at many other ranges in Canada and around the world. We have not used them to run a match yet because there is a learning curve especially for the older folk, I am 58 and running the system, no problem, it may be rocket science but what isn't these days, it's simpler than figuring out my TV remote. We are using the Silver Mountain Targets system which is made in Canada. They have been trialled by the USA Palma guys with excellent results and have also been trialled at Bisley UKNRA also with great results. If we could get markers that would do a good job then they never would have been considered. I started my career by marking targets at Connaught for the club when I was 16 and I can honestly say that since I was in the butts many years ago we have had maybe a handful of good markers since. Perhaps my interest in shooting helped me to figure out how to do a good job.
The couple of guys that opposed the etargets when the club approved the expenditure have since changed their minds and are the first on the etargets and really like them. I think you will find that anyone that opposes them will be found to either not have a computer at home or have gotten one very recently and will be afraid of them. These people need to be coddled along to see the advantages and the way it works needs to carefully explained many times over so they understand. I am not suggesting they are stupid but probably have never had a job or a reason to get involved with computers. My ten year old kids can figure it out so I am sure they can as well, if they try!
