Low Budget 10/22 "Pocket Rifle" SBR Project

TEG, I always chuckle when we use the word "low budget" with our builds. Its as if by writing that often enough, we will eventually convince ourselves that $900 is a low budget build. :)

After several requests for quotes on a custom barrel having been completely ignored by Dlask, I have ordered a 6" custom McGowen stainless steel barrel from Jerry at Mystic Precision.
I have located a Canadian dealer (Hical) who stocks the BC stainless folder and if a used one does not turn up, by the time the barrel arrives, I will go that route. Now I just need to find a good deal on a lightly used stainless/silver 10/22....

I can make a black one a cool matte or gloss grey color for you very quickly if that is all you can find. I can also probably get the barrel to match up quite well:) Like my fixed stock BC one.

I was offered a Choate already, but I really prefer the Butler Creek. My ideal stock would be this Ruger Mini 14 factory folder added onto a stock 10/22 wood stock:

The BC Stainless is the next best thing IMO

The last stock (fig 4) in your second photo was apparently an early Ramline. It really has the 'right' look.

I am not sure why you would want an SBX barrel in Canada. It was designed to meet the US barrel length requirements and allow for a suppressor. If I had a TD model I would order a custom length McGowen TD barrel - maybe 12"?:

Like the idea of having a gun I can still take to the states. Also only aftermarket production 10/22 Takedown barrel I know of out there. McGowen seems interesting would like to see some pics.

Well this is certainly a low budget build compared to an SR-22 (see posts #15 & #16)! I am able to fool myself into thinking this is a low budget build because I am only putting $300 out-of-pocket cash into the project, the rest is coming from selling off various stuff in the gun room. If I run low I have a nice mint condition 80's Wingmaster that may need to find a new home, but hopefully it does not come to that.

Thanks for the reminder Kim! That is a very good idea, that way I could have the receiver and trigger group match and there are a lot more reasonably priced blued 10/22's out there.

I really like that stock, however I am looking for a more "old school" wood and stainless look for this build. I did post a question in a different thread about wether the NEA CCS would work on a Nordic/SR-22 chassis, but never came up with an answer. I suspect the Nordic/SR-22 chassis may be too wide to clear the side bars of the retracted stock. I also read some quite negative reviews regarding fit and finish on this stock on several US AR forums.

This is the closest example I can find of my stock concept. Basically a BC folder attached to a wood stock with either an integral wood pistol grip, or an add on pistol grip like the AR PG shown on this Rhineland stock:

Picture this in wood and stainless:

I have a used stainless 10/22 on its way to me, and have ordered a 6" McGowen matte stainless barrel. I just need a BC folder and a wood stock and I am GTG.

The AR grip on that top one looks like amateur night... it really comes off as an afterthought. Maybe its the gap between the grip & trigger guard?

Bottom one looks much better IMO.

I'm starting to like wood finish more & more, ever since a CGN'r did it with his SR-22. I know there are wood kits for AR's that could work, but $$.

Im going to guess that the TC, by virtue of being spawned from a pistol frame was (accurately or erroneously...not sure) reverted back to pistol status. A gun can be made restricted 4 ways: order in council, rifle O/A length under 26 1/2",SEMI-AUTOMATIC Centerfire rifle with barrel shorter than 18.5", or conversion to pistol.

Fixed it for you.

You need the gap otherwise the trigger is too close (What the heck is the proper name for your hand/finger/trigger LOP?) and it is hard to control well and the SR22 gap filler works well to hide it.

Kim, I have been meaning to talk to you about this. I recently saw your Socom build thread and you mounted an AR carbine tube and AR PG on a stock Ruger wood stock right? Any chance you can help me with this project?

Yes, stock and PG on the stock wood stock. Of course, I was hoping you would ask:)

Update

I thought I would update this old thread. I have accumulated all the parts with the exception of the barrel (custom McGowen 6" on order from Mystic Precision).

I intend to replace the broken/damaged plastic stock with a custom modified Ruger birch stock and AR pistol grip and just reuse the stainless folder. The fake suppressor is just to show approximately what it will look like with a barrel. The actual barrel will be approx 1" shorter.
