trimmed sks barrel

$70 if you did it yourself you mean. $400 for the SKS I want is ok for me with a guarantee. I must have a high paying job.

I bought a 19" homemade chop job by "Grin" which turned to be a dud, he either used a torch or pipe cutter because rounds were all over the place. .307 neck. Also had to crown via the YouTube video. Never again!
No. Not if you do it yourself... The last gun I had cut and crowned I had done at dlask. I've had the same job done by bits of pieces and reliable. All 3 businesses employ real live gunsmiths and were right around the $70 mark.

Over paying for things doesn't mean you have lots of money or a high paying job...

18.6" chop job & crowned done by hical.ca for $200

I know it'll be a shooter..

Our local gun smith does muzzle jobs for $70-80,-. So yes, IMO you have been ripped off. What are those black specs on the muzzle in the pic? They didn't even polish it properly the way it looks.

They also left it "in the white"... An "gunsmith" that can't even use cold blue should maybe find a new job.

I don't have any gun smith's around me at all. so I would be mailing my stuff to them waiting weeks then getting it back. figured an sks is inexpensive on its own so if for some how I mess it up I can always use it for a parts gun.
Heading to silverdale today to give it a run.
removing the front sight and bayo lug made a difference in weight
will try for more pics today too.
Glenn.

I don't live next door to Dlask like all of you BC smiths on here, I can guarantee you can't get much done for $80 in AB. Must be a BC thing again to get a chop job for at price. I live about 5h from the nearest gunsmith which means mailing it anyways so I'd be looking at the $150 mark. I try to support dealers on here, my experiences with hical have been second to none.

Cost of a cut & crown is going to depend on how it is done. Hacksaw and a piloted crowning kit with an electric drill is pretty fast. Setting it up on a lathe takes a lot longer, should produce a more precise result. As far as finish on the cut surface goes, some prefer in the white, others, touch up blue.

The initial set-up on the lathe may take more time but once set-up the cutting/polishing on the lathe will be way faster - actually a matter of minutes. So a hack saw and piloted crowning kit may not be faster at all. Both methods, when done right deliver enough precision for a SKS rifle.

It's done with a lathe, highly polished finish and re-blued. When looking at an average, common machine shop rate of $85-100,- per machining hour including the operator/smith then $70-80 for a muzzle job makes sense as does $100,- if threading the muzzle is included. More than twice that is simply too rich for my taste. I'd rather put that money towards the kids than supporting CGN dealers.

Another one for the hical lovers ;)

Note: the cleaning rod is purely cosmetic on this photo, before all the experts chime in. They'll be doing the trigger job and side mount install too. It's going to be a fun gun to shoot.

It's been said before --- not too long ago! This kind'o shill reports pop up once in a while. A$$ cleaning rods included!

OP, looking forward to more pics.

Hey
went to silverdale yesterday and shot the crap out of my sks , the barrel held up well. buddy of mine tried mine to compare to his and indicated it had a bit more punch to it.
only a 1 inch difference and muzzle brake
few hundred rounds and no issues
Glenn.

You're something else... You've been burned yet continue to make excuses.
Dlask mails things. I know as they've mailed for me.
All of the other businesses employ gunsmiths. The owner of hical is a plumber.

Have a better look at what we have done. We charge $99 for the bayo sleeve removal & barrel chop & crown, we charged another $99 to alter the front sight, cut a new locating pin slot, boresight, blueing & relocate it to fit the "paratrooper" style build the customer wanted. Gun looks & handles great & we will probably be doing more of theses "shorty" SKS to stock at the store if anyone wants to drop by & handle one.

I was going to chime in with this for those that don't know whats involved with shortening an SKS to 18.5" and moving the front sight back. There seems to be a few in this thread that fit the description. For those that don't know what is involved here's a list of what is required for this "$70 job"
Drifting out retaining pins, pressing or tapping bayo lug/front sight base assembly off barrel
cutting, crowing barrel
Shortening the 1 piece bayo lug/front sight base. It is cut off behind the fsb
Opening up the ID of the fsb. The original part is a taper fit, both the barrel shank infront of the shoulder and the ID of the lug/fsb are tapered. To move the front half back further on the bbl requires work
The retaining pins are located on the top (front) and bottom (rear) but once the fsb is moved back you need to cut a new slot in the top of the barrel. This is a skilled operation as you need a snug fit for the pin and the slot indexes the front sight. If its crooked, your front sight is crooked.
Then of course assembly and touch up bluing.
Find a gunsmith that will do all that properly for $70 and you've found yourself a bargain. $200 is quite fair for the work done.

If you actually read the thread you would have noticed that airborne was talking about a muzzle job not about chopping the barrel and removing the bayo lug.
This thread I believe was not started to praise a CGN sponsor but it rather explains a DIY project. Why don't you guys open your own "highcal praise and defense" thread?
