Weatherbys Mk Vs... thoughts?

It says "capable of". Doesn't,mean it has to be in that cartridge. - dan

This is the key, the Mark V is *capable of* firing cartridges greater than 10kj, the cartridges/chamberings themselves are not mentioned in the list - just the models of the rifle. The rifles are being banned by name.

Not that I own any Mark V's...

heads off to buy some PVC pipe...

If they're banning everything that could theoretically handle 1 round at 10k, they banned like 2/3rds of the guns in Canada. Write to your MP and say this is a public health issue because we are entitled to firearm actions that won't blow up. A .30-06 action that couldn't be buffed to shoot a 10k projectile once isn't a safe action for .30-06. You have a right to not have your rifle dismember you.

You're missing a big part in your statement.
This is the heading pertaining to the Weatherby Mark V and many others...
"96. Any firearm capable of discharging a projectile with a muzzle energy greater than 10 000 joules — other than one referred to in item 12, 13, 14, 20, 22 or 30 of this schedule or one designed exclusively for the purpose of neutralizing explosive devices — including the:"

Yes, since the action is capable of supporting that energy, it is being prohibited even if currently it is chambered in a caliber not producing 10k joules

But it's not banned unless it exceeds that muzzle energy. The only weatherby chambering that meets the criteria is the 460 Weatherby Mag.

That is not what it says.

The regulation says "capable" the liberals have gone with the idea that if the action can support the energy, it's banned

A lot of chicken littles in this thread

Yes the ban is a bad thing, but don’t let your emotions get in the way of thinking for a second

I assume the guns “banned” by name had a 460 wby registered

Do you really think all m98 Mausers are going to be declared illegal?

This is the “12 gauges are now illegal” thing all over again. Focus on the guns that are actually going to be banned

If a gun is chambered in 7x57 or 30/30 how is it “ capable of” discharging a projectile over 10k joules

Do you think words don't matter? They name the Manufacturer and model without mention of the cartridge, only the energy... it is a short interpretational hop to; "the platform is capable."

No, some of the Weatherby models listed are/were never chambered in .460 Weatherby Magnum.

Get ready to kiss your “ Mauser sporters” goodbye then I guess

Apparently I’m the one who “thinks words don’t matter”, words like capable….

Those guns are now banned by name though -- the SKS is also banned by name, despite not being a "detachable mag centrefire semi-auto". "Banned by name" has always superseded any of the justifications.

Anyways, getting back to the topic at hand, if I did have a Weatherby Mark V I think I'd choose either a 6-lug in .280 AI or .30-06 or a 9-lug in a .300 Weatherby Magnum. My "imaginary" Mark V Hunter in .300 Wby Mag needed a pop can shim in the recoil lug pocket to perfectly center the barrel in the channel, but the glass bedding and floating job are great (in my head). It shoots right around 1 MOA with the "cheap" 180gr Interlock factory ammo (or so I pretend). I like the new stock geometry, but the Hunter is pretty light and after the first range session I put a Heathen on the end and it's a joy to shoot (or so I think).

Did you the entire article he send the link for? It spells out their way of calculating POTENTIAL!! Energy of any firearm makes 2/3 of the guns done!! The last couple pages spells out things it has to stop!

You mean as directly written into the amendment?

They will tell you what they think when they charge you. Then it will be for a judge to decide. Given the SCC ruling on the words "capable of...", should make for a short trial.

You actually think they used the words "capable of..." by accident?

Actually, yes, I think that is their goal. Hence why they worded their shyte the way they did. - dan

No I think they meant the gun being capable of doing it…

I’ll be selling tinfoil hats in the e.e should make a killing
