Took my SCSA Taipan X to the range again on Sunday. I like the concept of choice of bolt or pump (I also own a Troy PAR and an MRA Renegade straight pull). In total, I have maybe 75-100 rounds through it so far. Accuracy is OK with my handloads (BLC2 with Campro 55gr FMJ). Maybe 1.75-2" five shot groups with a 1-6 LPVO at 6X, 100 yards from a bag. A few things I note:
(i) when you hold the rifle, if you are pulling back even slightly on the pump it goes out of battery and fails to fire. It might be best to hold the firearm just forward of the magazine well.
(ii) mine fed fine with the included 5-round PMag, but didn't like my 10-round Cross Magazines (gen 1). As an aside, my MRA and Troy love the Cross mags - I use them for 3-gun in the USA
(iii) due to the pump I cannot place the rifle in a tripod stand. I should probably get a bipod for it, but the matches I shoot at don't allow bipods to be used for shots less than 200 yards.
(iv) maybe 2 times out of ~50 I get what feels like a stuck empty case in the chamber. I am not strong enough to pull back the pump or the bolt handle - I have to "bang" the fore-end of the pump on something (edge of the shooting bench) to get the bolt to retract. Maybe i need to clean it or oil it. My handloads are on the light end of my reloading manual so I am certain it is not an over pressure issue.
So far, nothing is a deal breaker for me but the Troy PAR solves issues i, ii, and iv, while the Renegade has none of these minor issues. One thing I really like on the Renegade is the ability to have both a left and right bolt handle.
YMMV
