Would be nice to actually have a decent Canadian made hunting rifle, as well as 10 round magazines in pistol calibres, carbine type. I am not really enamoured with military looking space guns, although a pistol grip version would serve me well. Call me a Fudd if you like, but spacey looking military tacticool rifles don't turn my crank. There are so many around you cant even tell what bloody make they are these days, they all look the same.

dude.... you are in the wrong forum. this is all about military space guns. the same reason i don't go to the hunting forum and complain about no pistol grips.

the only good thing about those fuddy guns, you start a good campfire with them:p

If they are around long enough, I'll get one. Might have to be off the EE though.

I will also suggest you add 243 as an optional caliber, somewhere down the line. Some people shoot a lot more varmints than big game. 308 for some folks, 243 for others.

What the Canadian market needs is a decent semi auto that does not look like a machine gun. How about a semi in 7.62 Nato that looks and feels like a good hunting rifle, in a variety of stock choices; capable of mounting different sighting systems and even scout configuration. If it has a barrel that will accept military firing rates all the better. Make it in 7.62 x51 and 7.62 x 39 i'm sure there would be interest here.

Actually if you are looking at it from a manufacturer's point of view, it is a good strategy to be able to manufacture a modified version that "looks" like a hunting rifle.

If it is only a black rifle, then from a political standpoint, the Libs are likely to get into power sometime again and ban/restrict it. If your sales are based largely on the non-restricted market, that could evaporate overnight.

Yes, something is coming out of this. It won't be in the stores tomorrow however.

Development takes time. We have been through the feature set. We looked at a LOT of designs and we have taken the good and left the bad so to speak. And we have added some innovations of our own.

Without giving away the design I will provide some hints. First, if you own a certain swiss rifle you will have a general idea of the gas piston return spring set up. If you know what the FAL gas regulator is like it will give you an idea of how we are approaching it.

Action is semi-auto only. Barrel is 18.6" cold hammer forged. Ambi safety, bolt release, and mag release. Have not decided on mags yet. Folding stock (does not look like a space boot) Monolithic free float RIS. Non-recip FAL style folding cocking mechanism. Possible quick lefty conversion if we can nail the bolt design down. Calibre 7.62 x 51mm.

As for profile it will be similar to FN-FAL but with a lot of changes and updates. Considering a wood furniture kit that would make a lot of Belgian supporters very happy.

First working prototype expected in about a year. At least 2-3 years until a dealer sees one. And yes, it will have a Maple Leaf prominently displayed on it.

Being a 308 enthusiast, I'm in for something under $2k. Will keep a watch on this.

I am a 308 enthusiast as well and I would support a canadian made FAL style rifle.

But I think the bigger issue would be to resolve the lack of availability of 308/7.26x51 ammo :(

If we can still own guns then, and it's priced reasonably, and it stays non restricted, I will be in.

Just wanted to add a few comments.

1) It will not be space age design. Think a little retro FN FAL with modernized lines and operating systems. Mostly metal and some composite.

2) It will not be under $ 2,000 but we are targeting under $ 3,500.

3) It will be a military pattern rifle and not some "californication" sporter.

4) It will be in 7.62 x 51 only. We looked at calibre interchangability, mag well switching and barrel swapping but there are rifles out there that do that and we wondered how often people actually use these features. So to keep price down and complexity low we decided on one calibre and a damn good one at that.

If it turns out that these rifles are banned in Canada, unlikely as though it may be, the intellectual property will be held offshore so that we can produce anywhere on the planet we like. We will also use third party parts production and have a small assembly team so that production locale flexibility is enhanced.

The main influence for this rifle is the FN FAL. I will always remember banging away with my C1A1 or unloading a C2. I loved the ergonomics, the heft, and the 7.62 x 51 when it went off. It is something the AR series, while excellent rifles, just does not illicit. I appreciate all your suggestions.

I am very exited about the idea of a "Made in Canada" new rifle design. I am not so sure about what the end result will be. It may be the best quality rifle that no one realy wants. I have not read too many responses that were excited about an FN FAL design. You seem intent on sticking with that idea though. So who will buy it? This is where the plan starts to lack reality. There are a lot of people like myself who would spend 3G on a new Canadian design, but 7.62 is not cheap to plink with, and it won't be hunter friendly, and it is not a cool new design, so I wonder, who is the target audience? Please keep an open mind to some of the very good suggestions about the concept that would sell to the masses. Make it top quality, price it accordingly and you will achieve your goal. So far you have my moral support.
