PDW builds - Lets see them, and share results

10.5" Shrubmaster... really more a CQB than a PDW, but...

Sold it to a friend, but I'm thinking about buying it back :) Ran great, only one FTE in thousands of rounds

Does anyones "PDW" fire a proprietary armor piercing rifle round?

Mine does. The round is the 6x38 SPEX which pushes an 87gr 6mm bullet at about 2300 fps. 5.56 in the top mag, 6x38 in the lower mag.

If NEA builds a .300 Blackout PDW at some point, I might buy one of those on a whim out of pure curiosity to see what all the rage is about.

They are wicked fun! :)

Well this is mine.

Probably more of a CQB, especially with the ACE Skelton stock it's wearing now, but it will have a MagPul CTR after I get it for Christmas :)

This is an all Bushmaster XM15-E2S with MOE grip and trigger guard.

The barrel is 5.56mm 1/9 10.5 inch heavy with a standard A2 flash hider. As you can see all iron sites and the MOE front hand guard.

The bolt carrier is a "heavy duty" or full auto carrier.

Looks like a lot of MagPul koolaid, but I went for fit and "comfort" and not necessarily astetics :)

There is no extra #### on this rifle. She's set up too run no matter the conditions. No batteries and nothing to snag on me or a vehicle.

ATRS complete build. They know the details, I just paid.

Have a look at my AR and tell me what you think. Rick at ATRS put it together for me and I'm very happy with how she turned out. Easy to shoot and keep on target. The weight is good and the side charge system at least in my opinion is the way to go except for some of the blow back. I like the color and am thinking of painting all my guns this color. The carbon shroud is really light and stays cool in comparison to some aluminum quad rails that I've had in the past. I am thinking of putting a gas/piston system under the shroud and this should eliminate the blow back felt through the side charge slot. As minimal as it is, it's there.

You are going to discover several problems.

First, that straight FDE paint job will get dirty really easy and it will look like ass when it is dirty.

Second, a forend rail has to be specifically designed for use with a piston system and that one isn't so you aren't getting a rail under it.

Third, I'm not sure how the side cocker could be described as "the way to go" when it has a major problem with bleeding gas into the shooter's face.

Im assuming these are not things that you were told when you purchased this rifle.

I agree with Suputin with respect to the rail system. My recommendation would be to just buy a separate piston upper. PWS makes a really nice 7.5" PDW, but if you like the option of a side charging handle check out Adcor Defense (Saskatoon Gunworks is bringing these in). Very slick system.

In terms of colour, just get the upper in black, throw a black MIAD or MOE+ on your lower and you'll have less of an issue with cleaning.

The only other thing I would probably recommend is just sticking with the AFG as opposed to both grips. I actually prefer just a ladder protector of solid set of rail panels on the bottom (Troy, Tangodown or Magpul).

Addendum: At the end of the day, rifles come in lots of different colours. It really comes down to personal preference.

You guys ( you know who you are) missed the whole point, if you set out cheese the rats will come. Lol if you actually read my posting, well let's just say that I'm not surprised...lmfao

The AFG is a better choice than both grips (also doubles as a hand stop; preferable on a PDW), and the flashlight is more suited to the side. Colour is really a matter of personal preference.

I assume you wanted honest feedback and you got it, so colour me confused.

I'm with Blaxsun on this one. You asked for opinions and you got what you asked for. As long as you're happy with it, that's all that matters. You didn't need to come here to get validation for your purchase.

I've got (3) AR's but I haven't been interested in them or the whole AR scene for almost a decade. I'm just slowly starting to get back into it. I don't know anything about piston driven gas systems or side charge assemblies and the like.

I will say this, however. If guys like K. Boland, Suputin, Blaxsun, Claven2, or any other highly experienced member told me something could possibly be dangerous, then I'd STFU and listen to what they had to say and I'd thank them for it.

I've personally handled the gun and aside from not being able to run night vision on the forward rail, it works well and is incredible balanced. There was no muzzle flash and as for the colour, because it has been cerecoated, any grime you get on the stock easily wipes off.

There are so many ways you can dress up an AR and this is one of them. As for placement of flashlight, grips and whatever else you want to dress it up with, it's all personal preference.

The piston system is something you'd probably have to take up with Rick. I'm not sure how much room it needs under the furniture but even if you have to move to a quad rail to make it work, you've got an excellent platform to build off of. Having gone down to The Shot Show and looking through so many versions of ARs, it's not even funny, I liked what ATRS incorporated into their uppers and lowers.

Interesting stock Peter, I remember seeing that stock in the build stage over at Alberta Tactical before you and Rich ran off with the plans for it. I think it's a neat colapsing system, for an MP5!!! I guess it just goes to show that copying something done well by another manufacturer doesn't always turn out as good the next time around. Call it carma I guess.
