Making the T97 more Reliable (Update #118)

well the feed ramps on my AR are un protected steel, so why does the steel on these guns need protection? last i checked, the copper plated bullet tips, brass or even steel cases are softer than the steel of the feed ramps.

Wow! Thanks for the heads up. I just checked my AR and it is bare steel too! Is my gun going to fall apart right away? Where can I take it to get the ramps parkerized?

LOL! Good point you make sir!

Instead of two small bevel, also try polishing your feed ramp. I did this on mine and it feeds Pmags perfectly. Keep in mind to go slow and take your time.

(Pictures to follow soon.)

I'm considering putting mine up for sale on the EE ;)

Lol what? Why are you even considering this. Buy the $3000 tavor

This got me thinking about not getting one, there is so much proven design rifles, you make adjustments on a 20.00 slingshot not a 1000.00 rifle even if this is not much money compared to a 3000.00 one, this is hardly acceptable... In my book that is... JP.

Hey Powerwagon, turns out they brought in the T97.
You know, the gun that was NEVER going to make it in.

I distinctly remember reading that from a gent in the Frontier thread (not affilliated with Frontier - a great firearms retailer that I can only say good things about, he was just one of the hangers-on) along with a recommendation to get a Tavor... Happened about a week before I dreamt that I got mine and posted pics of what I thought was a T97 and fired hundreds of imaginary Norinco rounds out of that figment of my imagination

I experienced the issue with the feed ramps, only worse. Using 4 LAR mags, coupled together, first round the bullet was pushed in.

Cleared it, made ready, fired, after 14 rounds a round was chambered almost fully, but the charging handle was locked and I could not cycle it. I literally had to push a cleaning rod down the barrel and gently tap it out with a hammer to clear it. The bullet was pushed into the case and the case mouth was all mangled - but I don't think it was from the cleaning rod. I caught the whole thing on video too, and will post it tomorrow.

I think it's the extra weight that causes the magazines to tilt forward - which if you don't plan to have more than 5 rounds in the mag, doesn't appear to be an issue. I have run 200 rounds through my other T97 with D&H, norinco CQ and the t97 factory mags loaded to 5 and had no issues.

Personally, I think the T97 is a semi-automatic light machine gun, am I would like its feed system to be more reliable. One of them has a date with a file tomorrow.

It shoots really great though. My best grouping of the day was about 1.5" at 50 yards with iron sights right out of the box.

agree! iw as getting consistent 3 inch groups at 100 with irons, some even 2.5 inch groups
with a good scope I would be really excited to see how it does - definitely good enough for hunting with!!!

any chance that this information will make it's way to North Sylvia and then to the manufacturer for these changes to be made at the factory level to improve future rifles off the assembly line? The feed ramp is a minor issue but the main concern for me would be the magazine fit. as it's intended to take AR mags, it'd be nice for us and anyone else in any other country that buys them that ALL AR mags fit naturally out of the box. I would also assume that that particular change will help the rifle sell anyways. i'm willing to bet a good number of people are choosing not to purchase this rifle based on magazine fitting alone. after all a magazine is a major functioning part of any magazine fed rifle.

Actually, the feed ramp is a big issue. The height of the magazine catch is too low as well. If the magazine catch can be 1-2mm higher, the whole feeding issue may be solved.

Bevelling the feed ramp so that the feeding cartridge directs towards the hole also helps the feeding.

This T97 now feeds from PMAG 100% reliably at any angle(Pushing the mag up, down, sideways etc etc)

Also feeds perfectly with LAR-15 10 Rounders.

Here's what it looks like with a Pmag inserted
