In the spirit of boasting one's new wares here on CGN, I submit this 35 Whelen "Rat Gun" (ala Rat Rod). I think it runs a bit counter to all the pretty guns one sees on the interweb these days.

Built on a Remington Sportsman 78 ADL action (1980s M700 pre-SPS cheapo offering) with a new 23" Lilja 1:12" SS bbl in an old Brown Precision stock. This is the fourth rifle I've had that stock on starting with a used 7Mag that was re-tubed to 358NM by Bevan King. That 358 was sold to a friend who decided a McMillan was in order so the stock was sold back and was put on an 30/06 only to finally become this current 35 Whelen. (This has become my all time favourite stock over all others that I have owned. I wish I had a bunch more of them.) The butt was extended 1/2" to bring it up to 13.5" and given the BDL treatment. I started to refinish the stock at one point and found some yellow under and couple layers of brown and black paint. Kinda ugly, so I left it as-is. Scope is an old Vari-X III 2.5-8 complete with gloss finish, ring marks and friction adjustments < gasp  >. Paid a mere $150US for the scope, so it's cheap enough be a a part of this project. The Weaver R&B are uber FUDD and were a no brainer. I just hope I can get all this antiquated optics gear to work enough to place a bullet even remotely near a target. :)
Weighs 7.5lbs as shown and handles quite nicely.

Go ahead, tell me it's ugly and make my day. I like it! :dancingbanana:

Sorry, I think its quite nice and totally functional as is.
No fear of scratching or getting dirty it is more useable than some of my fancy, fussy toys.

Sorry, that isn't ugly. I dig Frank on the butt of her.
The "Frank" thing has been a long joke here. My late FIL always had a different name for everyone. He tagged me with Frank, so when we had grandchildren it was only natural that the two boys call me Frank instead of grampy. I like it when the boys gimme a hug and say "Hi Fank". :)

i knew when ugly was coming that remington name was associated ... you made it Paul. congrats ....
You cut me Phil. :)

That is awesome, although a quickie krylon job would have made it more "Custom"

At least it does not look like a tupperware package job. Rat rifle it, is and I like it.

A well worn stock with many stories to tell......ha ha Frankenstein. A few more skulls to balance Frankie perhaps ... and one must appreciate the Fuddness :)

I like it Paul.....I have several of those Brown stocks and they are one of the best in my opinion. That yellow primer would indicate that it is an old Kevlar one which is a truly outstanding stock. I like the ergonomics of those stocks better than any other synthetic stocks. If you wished to de-rat it a bit, I have had great results with "crinkle" paint. Gives a nice appearance and texture and is quite tough. My 300 Wby 700 Rem is in one of those stocks designed for the Sako of old and the crinkle finish lasted many hundreds of thousands of miles and 10 or so years before I redid it.

Good to know that the yellow paint = kevlar. Thanks for that info.

I don't think I will be doing any de-rat refinishing to this one. Going to leave it as is, but I may install a FXII 4x fixed once I have some loads worked out.

For the most part, I'm neutral on your question Paul. While I can see and appreciate the field use benefits of many of todays choices of composite stock and stainless combos. my #1 pick is still blued steel and nicely figured wood. ;) However, you have to take that comment with a grain of salt as it's coming from a guy, whos two most recent purchases have been a pair of Wby. Vanguard S2 'Flame Throwers' :p .

I love it...... but I love it because it's ugly.......... hate those rings though..... :)
Lots of folks hate those weaver R&B but it's the most copied system out there, totally dependable, QD, cheap, rugged and flexible in application. Those are the four screw rings with screws on both sides. Big improvement over the older style for ease in mounting.

Ahhh...... I thought they were the super fuddly two screw ones...... carry on...... lol.....

That CT is beauty btw....... great pickup to john......

Too tired to bother contributing tonight, but...got a Ruger No. 1 that is pretty close to it. Minus the 2-tone paint job...some folks do bad things to guns, lol
